You probably don’t want to, but that kind of situation feels like what AirBnB was designed for
I agree.
A friend just visited and he says for the 6 weeks vacation he has in a year he rents out his apartment on airbnb–I could ask about his experience and how he vets people.
That’s so awesome!
It really is awesome to have your own place.
I am sure by tiny flat standards out place is huge.
But we’re kind of yard rich.
I remember little things like putting in my own light switch plate.
Which suddenly reminds me that I’m not sure if that got reinstalled after renovations.
The outcome of the IKEA trip was a 5x5 kallax - there may not be room for anything else…
Hammocks exist…
In the night a spider climbed into an upturned cup on my counter and laid some eggs. Don’t ask me how I discovered that.
how fast do little spiders grow inside the eggs?
So you’ve burned your house down and require new accommodations, right?
I am normally pretty chill about spiders in my home. I have one rule which is, “you can’t be in the shower when I’m in the shower.” Otherwise I’m happy to let them hang out.
Things might have to change after this morning.
I was narrowly missed by a car on my bike ride this morning.
Waterloo has a few protected bike lanes, and only one that is on the left side of a one-way street (so traffic goes east, and the lane is to the left instead of to the right).
This is the second time I have been missed by less than a meter on that five-block stretch of road. Cars in Canada rarely notice cyclists, and Waterloo is bad even by Canadian standards.
But the overwhelming reaction I had after almost being splattered across the road and the adrenaline wore off was disappointment. It meant I still had to go to work.
sigh
Ah well. Maybe tomorrow will be better.
I hope everyone (and particularly anyone UK based) is having a safe and fascist-free week
For anyone who doesn’t read UK news: UK disorder 2024 - BBC News
Hopes seconded. And meanwhile the media make it sound much worse than it is—most of the “protests” have been a few people turning up, seeing they’re outnumbered by the opposition, and going away again. But of course those aren’t the ones that get the headlines.
(Then there’s the way the BBC has happily platformed Farage much more than say the Greens whenever they have a current affairs programme…)
I’ve been reading the news and it sounds scary indeed. Hope you are all doing well and being safe.
It’s giving me very 2011 vibes. During those riots I was running a historic building conservation related summer camp for teenagers in London. We were working and staying in Southwark cathedral. I had a few worried parents phoning to check whether it was safe to send their children to London to which my answer was 1. London is large and it’s not this part of London, 2. Cathedrals have thick stone walls and big iron bolts on the doors, so it was arguably safer there than wherever they were travelling from.
I would definitely be more worried if I was in a demographic more likely to be targeted by the brick-throwing @&##s though.
Got sent home today as there was a planned protest in one direction from my work and a planned protest a similar distance from work in the opposite direction.
We skipped a planned shopping trip to a nearby city today. I don’t think there was any real risk, but it was an easy decision.
I was in Stratford for the 2011, got a bus where the driver just stopped anywhere he saw someone and picked them up to get ahead of the riot.
There’s a list of possible places that might get targeted today, and it included Walthamstow, Lewisham and Croydon. Ha. I am very certain that would not go well for the racists.
Either way, you can’t get to the site in Walthamstow right now because the public have shown up to defend it and absolutely filled the high street in both directions for a good half-mile. So whether it was never a target, or the numbers have dropped due to the first rioters getting sentenced today, or they turned up and saw the crowds and decided to go home, it looks like nothing’s going to happen there tonight. Big peaceful presence of the community instead.
In Brighton (where I grew up, famously liberal) there’s a Samba band and drag queens ready to meet the racists when they get off the trains. Imagine targeting Brighton. They’re going to be outnumbered 10-1 easily.
In my local area, Hounslow and Brentford were suppose targets, but seems like a nothing-burger where the counter-protest is the only thing present there - and so, they seem to just have a good time with the “down with this sort of thing” protest rather than fist fights. Sky (Brentford) sent its people home as a safe precaution. I mean, you’re marching on Hounslow? That’s one of the best ways for them to get slapped hard.
Rough day today. Kids were squabbling over tablets, as each broke one yesterday so we are down to two, but they are used to being able to have two each. My wife came out and brokered a peace, which lasted just a moment before our older son swung the tablet he had just gotten down hard on top of her head, instantly sending her reeling in pain.
Managed to get her to our room after a minute and got her some painkillers and ice. She already had a massive lump, though the ice helped reduce it after an hour or so. Meanwhile, we called her doctor’s office and eventually spoke with an advice nurse who recommended going to an ER to get a CT scan, so we did. Thankfully just a concussion, but it does mean she needs to rest both physically and mentally, so I am taking tomorrow off to handle the kids.
