Has anyone played or have an opinion about...?

Beast? My 11-year old has enjoyed hidden movement games, and enjoys assymetric games too. Beast seems ideal, but how is it?

SU&SD did a pretty solid review on it, so that should answer all your questions and more if you have 15 minutes.

If I recall correctly, they loved it at 3 and disliked it at 4, as the map got too big and everything fell apart. But they really liked it at 3.

Thanks Acacia. This will be mostly 2 I suspect.

I don’t remember what they said about 2. Assuming 2 is ok, Beast is a good option. And then Jaws for something smaller scale, and Fury of Dracula for something larger (within asymmetry and hidden movement).

Going by BGG, Beast polls best at 3, then 2 slightly outperforms 4 (69.6% vs 65.8% recommend, though interestingly the non-recommend of those player counts is 18.8% vs 13.7%), and then more than 4 is very non-recommended at 97.9%.

Jaws is the one that got him into it, he loves part 1. Fury is hard to get nowadays and my memory is that is drags on a bit.

Oh interesting! I don’t think we’ll play it much at 4 but I’m surprised how much difference it makes.

That’s my impression of the FFG version at least. Also here’s an interesting hidden movement game but the reward for playing it well is that you get to play a tedious combat game.

I was very impressed by MIND MGMT as a hidden movement/hunting game that doesn’t overstay its welcome. It worked quite well at 4 players, but I suspect it will also work very well with fewer.

Oh, and Treasure Island if you want a very unusual style of “hidden movement” (sorta?) which I really like. Better at larger player counts, which is atypical for the genre.

I also really like Not Alone, but again, it shines with more players (4-5, I think, is kinda the sweet spot, although it works okay with 6 or 7). But it abstracts the hidden movement heavily.

Oh, and of course, the classic Specter Ops is very good. Hard to find, though.

IDK what your thoughts on Evolution/Oceans/Nature family.

Had a look at your ratings as well and will suggest games that you have not rated:

  • Ponzi Scheme - this is my number 1 suggestion. This is available on retail now for cheap after being OOP from TMG!
  • Carson City
  • Skyrise
  • You’re Bluffing (cheap 2nd hand)
  • Senators
  • Xylotar
  • Endeavor: Deep Sea
  • Acquire - either cheap old edition 2nd hand or get the Renegade edition from retail
  • Bus
  • Le Havre or any sanbox Uwe (in contrast to tight ones like Agricola, but hey try that one too)
  • Nyakusa
  • Power Grid (you never played it?)
  • Rise and Fall
  • Goodcritters

I’m not sure if they’ll reach the 10s, but eh, you have a wide range of games you rate highly

Cheers

There’s definitely games on there that I like or are interested in.

Just got a second hand copy of Domaine which is seen on the OG Guild and sounds up my street.

Have also just bought a copy of Ponzi Scheme

Happy to show you Senators at Airecon if you’re interested.

I’d like to suggest First Class. It’s not currently in print but there’s cheap second hand ones about.

It plays quickly, I’d say around an hour with 4 who have played before. you get 5 decks and use 2 each game. So the interaction between the decks adds to the variety as well as the different cards you use each time. The combos get satisfying ,building your engine works up to some big turns which can be thrilling. It’s just a really good euro.

It’s not a million miles from La Granja in feels but plays fast and teaching is straight forward to hobby gamers.

Clans of Caledonia… the Industria expansion? Does anyone have it or has played it or done research on it ? The comment section on BGG seems a bit divided …

I missed the kickstarter and then grief researched it, as I don’t think it is coming to retail.

I’ll be ok without it.

Basic sentiment was, it’s good, it’s not essential, and it’s more. Kind of like rails to the North, it’s just a whole new thing to do and worry about, but the game doesn’t give you more time or resources, so you just end up further divided and doing a little less of everything.

I think there were also new clans, which were viewed quite favorably. But the whole train mechanic was “I like it, but I only interacted with it 4 times in my playthrough and I won’t use it every time.”

there was something about a streamlined solo which I’m always interested in. the trains things looks a bit superfluous

Stardew Valley Boardgame

Cosy games like Stardew Valley on the Switch are keeping my wife sane (just about) when she is largely bedbound due to the fatigue of long Covid so thought this might make a good present.

Anyone ever played it?
