A Downsizing Challenge

Well, I sold two out of my sale list here. I suppose I ought to go through the rigmarole of GeekMarketing them, or eBaying, or something.

Now it is officially too late to buy myself a game for Christmas. I did it  I mean I didn’t… you know… buy a game for Christmas.

I thought about it plenty though. We’ll see how this carries over into 2022. I am still not below 200…

That’s a great achievement! Well done

You should be very proud of yourself.

Now… sales… that’s the next hurdle…

But well done!

So as announced elsewhere I bought a new game the other day: Cryo.
I do not feel like it is breaking my downsizing effort. Downsizing is not going to mean that I do not buy any new games at all. What I mostly want to do is regain control of collection growth and size. For some time it seemed there was no end to my new game acquisitions.

I was curious if buying a single new game was going to change how I thought about other games I am interested in. It didn’t.

I have been watching some of the Dice Tower end of year top 10s. I used to add lots of games to my wishlist when watching those. I think so far I added a single game to my “want to play” list (note: that is a step below wishlist!). The game is Final Girl and only because it is based on Hostage Negotiator which I am interested in but have not played.

There are many interesting games but for now it looks as if my brain goes “oh nice, I’d play that” instead of the previous “oh nice, I want to have that”

Right now I want to purge enough games to get below 200 (I count preorders within the 200. I do not count about 20 games that I marked Nostalgia—either mine or my partner’s). Yesterday, I sent out a list of nearly 40 games to my friends to see if anyone is interested. This list is a little longer than my sell-list because I wouldn’t quite lose access to all those. 30 of those are on the sell list. If I got rid of all 40, I’d be at 198. So… I am getting there.

I have not decided yet, if I want to keep the collection permanently at 200 or if I am going to allow a slow net-growth.

I am also trying to reduce the Nostalgia. My own at least. But that is a different topic which is why I am not counting those as part of “The Collection”.

I’m the same, and I don’t know if it’s because
a) 2021 wasn’t great for new games,
b) I bought a LOAD of kickstarters and favourites in 2020 and now I have one of most types, or
c) it’s just been long enough since I entered the hobby that I can understand that “hype” doesn’t mean I’ll enjoy it when it arrives and I don’t need to spend money as much now.

But Final Girl is the no1 game from the Top 10s that went on my list, too

I ended up putting unsettled on my list. I liked the theme and saw it as a potential double hander for solo play or a co-op (pandemic is the only co-op in my collection).

I was very tempted by final girl but the fact it’s a very expensive purely solo experience I resisted. I’m making a deal with myself if I can resist buying any new games for 2 months I’m going to flog a first edition comic I have that is selling quite well on e-bay and buy a nice crokinole board.

I almost backed Unsettled on Kickstarter. But didn’t. I almost bought it when one online shop got their retailer copies. But didn’t. It looks fascinating… and yet… I passed it over twice.

Maybe, that one is on my list to check out if/when they ever make another Kickstarter with expansions. Or maybe not.

I’ve just run out of room, so back on the big box purge.

That said, I’ve just taken a look at my wish list and purged many games from it. I’ve kept three games on

  • Schrille Stille
  • Ra (25th Century Games version)

The last one is a new version of a game I own. The other is being reprinted eventually by Spielworxx and I’ve played it. It’s nothing like anything I own.

I believe there is a kickstarter with new planets this year. Final girls second Kickstarter I think is next week.

This information does not belong on this thread. Oops

I managed to give away a few games to friends that dropped stuff off… I sold my Imperial Fleet for Star Wars Armada (I still have my Rebel and Republic fleets, but I never played the Imperials) and gave the buyer a copy of the War of Indines, Battleline, and something else small… and my partner and I played Little Town and neither of us cared for it, so it goes on the list to be cleared out.

That stated, both times when I was going to offer games to my friends… it was hard to pick games I didn’t mind getting rid of. It’s going to be a struggle to shrink the collection…

I just put up 2 ads on ebaykleinanzeigen.

One for City of Chaos–letting go of some of my nostalgia here. Although I put a high price on it. It’s a rather unique and pretty cool OOP game from 1996. But realistically I won’t play this one–also if someone bites I may have room to get the announced new edition if/when it happens

The other one is a group-ad not for bundles but for “make your own bundle” games (like I am only mailing games if people bite for at least 30€). I think it has around 30 games in it. Some may be a bit overpriced–but this has to do as much with how I value the games as opposed to how others might value them. F.e. Alchemists has a pretty great foamcore insert. I just looked at it and thought “why aren’t we playing this?” so the price went up 10€.

The things I really really want to get rid of I will put up in a “get all these for 10€ + shipping” add if they aren’t gone by February.

PS: The games I am trying to find new homes for. If anyone is in Germany or willing to risk horrible shipping have a look. I'll not ask anyone here the same prices I put up for the ads. Most games are in German though
  • Squaring Circleville–taught myself and probably not a bad game but not one I want to convince anyone to play and solo is just too much tracking, the mechanisms do not grab me they feel a bit random, not well-rounded.
  • Kingdom Builder, Alubari, Istanbul: our friends have these
  • Alchemists: love deduction, don’t love the rest of the game.
  • Obscurio: so beautiful. So hard to play. I prefer Dixit and Detective Club
  • Barony: has been languishing quasi-unplayed in my shelves since Christmas 2015, played it at SPIEL loved it but couldn’t get anyone to play with me and now I have Inis, Iwari, War of Whispers, Root and others in similar corners
  • Res Arcana: recently played again on BGA and wasn’t impressed by what I saw. I’d rather play Race/Roll for the Galaxy or TM: Ares Expedition
  • Bloody Inn: nice concept, but I do not get the praise from solo-players. There are so many newer games that are more fun. But maybe I just haven’t looked at it for too long and forgot it is cool. No idea and no desire to try.
  • Under Falling Skies: I thought I was going to play the campaign. Then I looked at it all and decided I would try to sell it first because once I start that, I don’t think I’ll be able to put it back together.
  • Awkward Guests: too much card sorting fiddliness
  • Llamaland: wasted potential. Great idea for polyominoes stacking that fell flat in actual multiplayer. At least for me. Other’s AP didn’t help. Rather play Miyabi or Gingkopolis.
  • Fort: I love deck builders but not this one.
  • Rocketmen: we played once and it wasn’t bad. But everytime I look at the box I want to have the time to play Leaving Earth instead
  • Way of the Samurai: fighting solo game that I never quite grokked. I am finding that dedicated solo games are rarely my thing.
  • Ganymede: not bad but also not great. I’d play again but having to convince others to play when I can convince them to play other games… meh.
  • Great Plains: yet another 2 player my partner hated. I had hoped our friends would pick up that one and I may yet gift it to some of the kids…
  • The Isle of Dr Necreaux: old coop nostalgia. I doubt anyone will even know this. We solved the game at some point and I only still have it because it was one of my earliest coops and deserved the nostalgia.

Plus a bunch of small stuff and things I tried selling before. Letting go of quite a few smaller 2 player games as well.

I had no idea people were so keen on Awkward Guests–4 requests within half an hour of posting the ad. The first one also wanted a bunch of other games, so that’s great. Also Bloody Inn is already gone. Collection count reduced by 10!

Dr. Necreaux is a game I so deeply wanted to love, but it was just too damned fiddly for a solo experience and I didn’t have a group to let it really sing. What a bizarre little box, I’m glad I’m not the only one around here familiar with it.

As for Awkward Guests, I had a similar experience selling mine, as have friends. I think it’s one of those games where, if you have a group that’ll dig it, you’re always going to be on the hunt for it. It’s constantly OOP.

To this day my friends make jokes about the deadly mono-filament wire.
We struggled and struggled to win this until one day a player came a long who immediately grokked it and then we never lost again. Not that I remember how that worked. It does need more than 1 player though. I think it worked best at 4 or so.

The German reprint for Awkward Guests is announced for April. I priced it at 10€ below what the new game costs… If it wasn’t so fiddly with the cards I think my friends would like it. I think I previously noted how my solos gave my 7th Continent flashbacks (that’s a game we wanted to love, and it will forever take up space on my shelves b/c it is my partner’s.)

January is almost over and it’s time for another update.

There was that moment that stressed me out SO MUCH. And I was like “I need to… need to… NOT buy a game.” I don’t want to stop buying games but I don’t want to impulse buy stuff when I feel bad. I want to be able to cope without stress-buying things. I almost managed. But at least the only thing I bought was an app (Maracaibo). I still want to be able to play the stuff I have over just buying and learning new games.

So for January–which is almost over and I’ll be on holiday for the rest of it so no shopping–I didn’t do too badly.

January 2022 "additions" to the collection
  • Kickstarters arrived: Tussie Mussie Expansions and Petrichor
  • Secret Santa #2 arrived: Ramen Ramen!
  • bought: Cryo
  • re-bought: Sushi Go (I sold my Sushi Go Party knowing I was going to rebuy the small version).
  • backed 1 Kickstarter: Viscounts of the WK Expansions and Bigbox
  • completed 1 pledge manager and added games: Verdant (I backed the OG Kickstarter) + couldn’t resist Cascadia and I will be selling my German edition of Calico b/c the KS edition is nicer.

The statistic counts this as 4 games in. I don’t count expansions, previous preorders and I don’t think I should count “rebuys” but I count preorders. So that’s still 3: Cryo, Ramen Ramen & Cascadia. That’s one more than I had wanted. But with all the selling I think it balances out. I am not setting a budget but I definitely got more money back in than I spent.

As opposed to Januar 2021
  • backed: Radlands, SUSD Don’t get Got, Tussie Mussie Expansions, Darwin’s Journey, Way of the Samurai, Planet Unknown (? not sure about that date actually but BGG says so)
  • bought: Azul, Polynesia, Nidavellir, Star Wars: Unlock & Nusfjord Salmon Expansion, Kanagawa Expansion, Seasons of Rice

Maybe inspirational/aspirational? Dumped since the new year:

  • Calico (done with it)
  • Cryo (miss with my partner)
  • Hawaii (meh)
  • HeroQuest (too much box for occasional play)
  • Luna Capital (this might have been late December but I’m letting it squeak in. Anyway, yuck.)
  • Nanga Parbat (languishing)
  • Paper Dungeons (meh, reaching for other stuff)
  • Rangers of Shadow Deep (ditching the terrain idea)
  • SEAL Team Flix (box size, upcoming reimplementation)
  • The Search for Planet X (languishing)
  • Stargrave & Quarantine 37 (see Rangers of Shadow Deep)
  • Survive: Space Attack! w/expansions (Massive bust with intended audience)
  • Thunderbirds complete collection (miss with my partner, good solo but not of the type I’d reach for)
  • Tsukuyumi Full Moon Down (huge box, crummy game)

Whew!

Is there a way to track when you changed status of game on BGG?

You can set the column “last-modified” to visible in the collection overview. Assuming, that the last change f.e. for previously-owned would be when you mark it as such… you could track what left your collection when. In my collection that seems to work out pretty well (except I had Kalimambo rated an 8 and recently changed that–I gave the game away years ago)

There is also a “Date Added” column and if you track that manually an Acquisition Date (I track that). Date Added may not be so valuable because it only tracks when you first did anything with the game like rate it or mark it with any status which may well be Wishlist or Want To Play.

Other than that there is geekgroup app which tracks stuff that you change after you imported to geekgroup.

So this month has not been good for not buying games. I bought a copy of unsettled, it had nice painted miniatures and I would never have painted them, I can also see myself soloing this game although I will try to get my partner to give it a shot.

I bought a copy of parade too.

All of which means that based on my little promise to myself (no crokinole board till I have two months without a purchase) no crokinole this month.

Nice work in Jan😁. I’m still trying to make up for November and December purchases!

I’m also feeling a lot better about not having so many unloved games floating around making me feel bad for buying new ones!
I’ve managed to shift quite a lot, thankfully

Once you commit and spend a day getting it all on eBay it’s not so bad really. I’d recommend weighing games before guessing their shipping costs though!

Still working out what to do with my mish-mash of 1st and 2nd ed X wing stuff though…
