2021 10x10 Style Challenges

Just in time!

Perhaps for next year I’ll pick the games in advance and do it properly. I’d like a few more substantial ones in there really, but don’t want to set myself up to fail!

I think I’m going to make a concerted effort to reduce the opportunity on my shelf. Even if a lot of it needs to be online play.

Post of how many games I have unplayed on my shelf is imminent.

One final report before the curtain drops on this year… still nowhere close, but by adding Sleeping Gods to the mix I can at least get a few more plays.

Coincidentally, Sleeping Gods is very good. I’m still unclear on what we need to do to win, but I suspect that’s part of the journey. Normally I’d find that enormously frustrating, but not so much currently.

Also started a PBF game of Twilight Imperium IV, and I look forward to getting my teeth kicked in.

Still no surprises here. I look forward to shrinking my shelf of opportunity in the New Year… assuming this pandemic ever ends and I can socially see humans I like at any point in my life again.

I‘ve been inspired by your gaming streak  Mine includes a lot of solo games and sometimes just a quick round of Sprawlopolis but I‘ve been at it since December 8 now. Not quite as impressive but I plan to keep going.

Final Challenge report for the year:

The „easy“ 10x10 included: Beyond the Sun*, Calico*, The Crew 2*, Pandemic Legacy 2, Race for the Galaxy, Railroad Ink Challenge*, Rallyman GT, Roll for the Galaxy*, Sprawlopolis and Tash Kalar.
(*) are new to me games

The 20x5 challenge additionally included: Fairy Trails, Fantasy Realms, Flourish, Imperium: Classics, Chronicles of Crime, Nidavellir, Oath, Red Rising, Scapegoat, Space Base, Spirit Island and Splendor (this is more than 10 additional games, as the auto-fill takes them in the order they come in)

I failed at the 10x10 new to me games b/c I only got in 9 games of Scapegoat, 6 of Oath (some solos anyway) and 6 of Red Rising.

And the „no solos“ challenge mostly failed b/c I didn‘t play enough Splendor and Space Base with my partner (plus the stat is not quite accurate due to tool limitations—I play multihanded solos a lot.)

I’m interested in the site/app you’re using for your challenges, it looks better for them than the one that I use for everything else. Which one is it?

Not quite going to finish this one before tomorrow evening, but I’m okay with the progress!

But it would be a good day if you did!:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Maybe I’ll try and clear my unplayed again this year. I got it down from almost 40 to 16, but over the last few week it’s continued creeping back up to 33!

Excellent motivation from all you dedicated folks :game_die::+1:

Edit:

Had a play with a couple of apps and set myself some unreasonably high goals to probably fail at! It does mean my streak will hit 469 by the end of next year if I keep it up.

Played: Star Trek: Five-Year Mission; Ta Yu; Ex Libris

— 2021 Challenge Stats —

  • 52 of 100 target plays completed… just scraped in a pass
  • Target plays completed for (a paltry) 21% of games
  • 167 plays of challenge games when overruns are included (thanks, KeyForge)
  • 84% of specified challenge games played at least once
  • Poor Masque of the Red Death remains BNIS for the second year running. Requiring four people in the same room who are willing to play a moderatly complex game was a challenge that could not be overcome
  • 26 unplayed games from the collection played… but 36 new games came in so, in effect, things went backwards in that department :see_no_evil:

Onwards to a new challenge for 2022…

69 total plays. Squeezed in one last play on the Castles of Mad King Ludwig app against AI, and meant to do the same in the Galaxy Trucker app to make up those plays, but did not get the chance.

When looking at my total plays for the year, found out I had played Imperial Assault at the beginning of the year before making my challenge list, so it actually did get played once this year. A couple of solo plays of The Bloody Inn and actually getting Chinatown to the table twice more (once on New Year’s Day, but I am counting it), and two plays off of my singles list.

On to the 2022 challenge!

A bit late to report in but better late than never.
In review I bit off more than I could chew with my 2021 goals. I completed only one out of the three. The first I didn’t complete was my 10x10, in hindsight I could maybe have gotten this done if it was my only goal but I also picked pretty tough games for it. I even changed to any 10 games 10 times in the middle of the year and didn’t get that done. I didn’t super enjoy the feeling of the self inflicted pressure to play games but maybe I would enjoy doing a 10x10 or a 20x20 in the future.
My second goal was to play all of the games I own which I didn’t really expect to do but I got fairly close so I’m fine with that.
My third goal I knocked out of the park. It was to play 25 new (to me) games and I ended the year at 72. I enjoyed the hell out of this one and I realized I love exploring new games. I think I’ll do another 25 this year.
So overall didn’t do super well but I’m fine with how I did and it showed me my gaming habits and what I like more clearly. While I didn’t do great on it I think trying a 10x10 is worthwhile.
