Your Last Played Game Volume 3

Played a couple of games of Navegador in the last week or so. I think it’s really cool!

There’s so many neat facets to it. There’s like this neat economics bit in which cornering a market is attractive. There’s this adventurer aspect where the swashbuckler has to pay a fair cost to move forward.

In particular I don’t think I’ve really enjoyed a rondel this much before either. It’s really fun to snipe or hold back on the next flavour of turn based on the danger or safety posed by your opponents positions (both on the map and on the rondel)

In our last game my partner was the swashbuckling sailor while I just sort of followed behind hoovering up the remaining resources (and sometimes the best bits). She won with her way which I think was great because I sort of felt bad about how often I played like an arsehole (taking the points chip she wanted for example).

Really good fun I think.

Played our first game of Passing through Petra. It’s somewhat unlike anything I’ve played before. Essentially you’re wheeling around tracks (they’re circular) trying to complete loops in order to discard tokens, if you get rid of all of your tokens you win!

The amount you move on your tracks is determined by this novel queue mechanism which has a brain burnt kind of feel. I cannot really explain it in text.

We both had a good time with it. It’s principally very solo except that you are racing.

Galactic Cruise - played it again for good measure. 3 players with the standard game, instead of the basic. Same thoughts as last time. And might even be more simplistic than I initially thought.

Race for the Galaxy + Alien Artifacts

Ark Nova - 2 player game. One of our regs came along and brought her copy for the first time. Tried to play it at 4 players with 3 newbies and it was a disaster and have to abort. I wanted to play it again anyway and ask for a faster 2 player game and glad she said yes. We finally got a complete game and it was fun. I’ve been playing TFM a number of times now and not enough AN, but man, how much I hate TFM now. Ark Nova at least have the decency to remove the redundant resources.

New Frontiers

Bonfire - standard Feld with more rules than usually thought. Awful.

Glory to Rome - amazing. Friend brought his pnp version and it looks great (using old photos)

Modern Art

Rebirth

Darwin’s Journey - family game about public drafting of tiles and making bingo rows/columns. It’s alright. Seems like something I would own for the club instead of for myself.

I got to (teach and) play Everdell last week-end. Lost to my friend on her first game. But while I would really have liked to mulligan my starting hand and struggled in Spring, I felt I was ahead throughout most of the game, so that was pretty good  She won because she had more purple cards… duh. I did a lot of optimizing shenanigans and was once again reminded that it’s quality of cards that counts not quantity. Oh well.

Before that (order!) we played a 3 player round of Trailblazers (my first multiplayer of this after 60-ish solo-games). I gave a long speech about the hybris of long paths and played very conservatively and so won. It’s pretty good as a solitaire-ish multiplayer drafting. It’s easy to teach, easy to transport and the routes are just as fun in multiplayer as in solo. And hearing the other players yelp and swear about the cards is kind of encouraging: everybody struggles.

I played a four player game of Hubworld: Aidalon with the preview decks that are available via their Gamefound page. I’m under the impression that it is a lot like Netrunner, but with the asymmetry removed such that everyone is trying to protect their assets while simultaneously stealing your opponents’. However, I’ve never seen nor played a game of Netrunner(!) so I can’t comment on how similar it feels. The multiplayer aspect was interesting, as there was some strategy in deciding whether to wait until one player was weakened by others, potentially saving resources, or go in first which might give you a higher chance to find what you’re looking for. I had a really good time with it and would definitely play it again, but without the guarantee of a regular group I’m not sure I’ll be backing this.

My wife and I also played our first two games of Compile, which arrived this week. I won one and lost one, and the player who played second won both games, which I think bodes well. Having abilities that trigger whenever they are revealed, e.g. by the card flipping or a covering card being removed, made for some really interesting decisions throughout the game. At one point I was able to move my opponent’s card, revealing one of their effects which was mandatory and ended up hampering them. On another occasion I really wanted to move my opponent’s card but also really didn’t want to reveal the effect of the card below. For most turns it didn’t feel like there was an obvious best decision, it’ll be interesting to see if that remains true as our familiarity increases. My early impression of the game is very positive.

Another game of Key Flow which I still deeply appreciate for all the reasons previously stated.

That is a very nice PnP, and not art I’m familiar with - is it all custom, or lifted from another language version?

Well it seems like I’m shifting to writing these monthly… Not intended but there you have it:

Point City x4, four plays of this one this month - all very enjoyable. There’s a good chunk of luck but I guess time will tell how much strategy it has vs just reacting. It’s interesting to see the Splendor discount accrual, in a game that is not a race, as players always have the same number of turns, it’s just what you do with them that matters. It’s been well received amongst numerous gaming buddies so I’m sure it’ll see more play this month.

Arboretum, yeah not sure if this was my teach being rusty from not playing in awhile but the reception to this one was a little frosty. It is a game that doesn’t reveal itself right away, so that makes sense. Hopefully I can talk them into another play as I really do enjoy the game.

No Thanks, still great.

Cafe, a replay of this with the same group as last month at the colour blind players request. I still like it alot but he concluded it might just be too tricky for him with the colours. Which is a shame.

HUE, a great filler or wind down game - only five or so decisions each game, but they’re interesting as the same cards you play to build colour groups, you are throwing away for scoring purposes. Still might be my favourite of the series (though NUT is close!)

Tyrants of the Underdark, an imperfect teach from me but we got there. I think it’s the first time we’ve played with four but it was super fun. Lots of spiteful plays which fits the theme rather well :stuck_out_tongue:

Trajan, oh man - what a surprise this one was! I was totally prepared to hate it but gosh, I rather liked it! I expected the core mancala mechanic to melt my brain, but instead I just felt super engaged. Again, not a lot of interaction, but folks definitely stole stuff I wanted and the way your plays can lengthen or shorten the game was delightful. I may have to keep an eye out for a reprint of this one, cause with a more modern look and sharper art it’d be one I definitely want to own. As it is, I may ask its owner to bring it again before too long…

Perudo, taught this to a mostly new table after an easter afternoon tea and went over really well. My mum won - I was quite proud of her actually - she did really well!

Incan Gold, the second game we busted out after the arvo tea and it also went really well. I lost by one point (and if I’d bailed on the final run one turn earlier I would’ve had it!) We were discussing the different versions of this one afterwards and there’s quite a few and most of them sound better than the version I have! Also I’d never considered it before but I think we’ve been playing wrong (I’m gonna blame an ambiguous rulebook) - when multiple players leave at the same time and there’s gems on the cards, I had been splitting per card, but someone said their version describes players splitting the whole lot. I’m curious what others think but as soon as they said it I was like ‘huh that kind of makes more sense’.

Jekyll vs. Hyde, got this new acquisition to the table with a buddy before the rest of our gaming group arrived and we both enjoyed it a lot. I’d played it before at a con a few times. Those potion powers can be super frustrating though! But I’ve already established I’m not great at trick taking games despite enjoying them. I think it’s definitely more challenging as Hyde than Jekyll but I’ve certainly lost as both… I’m hoping this will go over well with my wife (who’s having chronic back issues making gaming tricky right now…) As we really enjoyed The Fox in the Forest, so we’ll see.

Sea Salt and Paper kind of a half game of this before our 4th arrived. Still one I super enjoy as a filler.

Mexica, big game of the night, new to most of the table and first time with a full 4 players. Very vicious for a euro - lots of in your face and denial plays. I came in a fairly distant second - our leader kind of stomped the second half of the game fairly impressively!

Harmonies, got this to the table with a buddy and it was very enjoyable. He’s generally more of an interactive gamer (he’s a big fan of 18xx games and wargames) rather than the puzzle it out euros that seem in vogue right now. Still enjoyed it despite that.

Suburbia, busted out my big collectors edition - setting up is fine but gosh these big boxes can be hard to put away! Still glad I got it though. I did amazingly well and scored all the goals in the end (and he didn’t get his)! Which I’ve not seen happen before.

Blitzkrieg x2, won the first by bombing and won the second as second player thanks to him not getting to take his final planned turn. Not always the most satisfying ways to win but fun.

Castles of Burgundy, requested a friend bring his super deluxe copy over for game night. Some of it is awesome (especially impressed by the recessed board with overlays and the bags for the tiles (not sure why there isn’t one for the goods though…) but it’d want to be at the price tag! The game is still mostly the same (we did play with one little expansion, the vineyards, which I liked though probably didn’t pay close enough attention to). I did pretty badly in the end. Just shy of 200 points, while our winner managed to win with 230 or so. Still super pleased to get an in person play of this plus checking out the deluxe version was cool.

Custom. Someone from a faraway London club made a limited run.

I’m in the middle of a BGA tournament for A Gest of Robin Hood. In the two games I’ve played, I’ve been the Sheriff both times and won both games. First game was really back and forth and could have gone any way at the end. I managed to win with just 1 point of Order.

The second game went my way because my opponent kept rolling horribly for his Rob attempts, failing a large majority of them, impacting his available funds, and also preventing the loss of one of my carriages. I really thought I was going to win at the end of the second Ballad, as I had 6 Order, but he made a Camp to get 1 Justice and then had enough parishes revolting to get one more to get me out of the instant win zone. Still won the game at the end with 4 Order.

Now I’m waiting for the other games to finish up so my third game can start.

Cosmic Encounter - My wife chose the Masochist (wins the game if all her ships are lost) and happened to get the Kamikaze flare in her opening hand (can sacrifice your own ships to add value to an encounter), and with no Mobius Tubes or Card Zap to be found anywhere other than, yep, her hand, she cruised to an unconventional victory.

It was so quick we decided to play another one which was more the usual slow climb up to four colonies and then finding out who would win it. I was the Pacifist (win an encounter if I play a negotiate and my opponent plays an attack) and was the most obvious target for Cosmic Zaps. I tried to use it to win and got zapped; the game made its way around the table to me again and this time I had a little more bulletproof ammo, aka an Attack 23 with a x3 kicker.

Yeah taking the whole total and splitting between everyone leaving is the correct way (as far as I know in every version of the game)
Only exception is the relics module, where if you’re playing with that then a relic only gets picked up if there is exactly one person leaving

I’ve also been splitting per card, and now I don’t know why because I checked the rules and it clearly says to split the total, leaving the remainder on any card.

Maybe it just seemed intuitively wrong to imagine some of the gems being dropped again after they’d all been picked up.

(Whereas one can imagine them all hurrying back through the cave together, only ever having time to collect the exact same number of gems from any given room as each other person, lest they fall behind the pace and miss out.)

Round Up of the last few days

7 Wounders Duel + Pantheon, a poor parenting moment when I stomped my youngest into a miltary defeat, causing them to lose the game in the last three cards. They locked up and did nothing for 10 minutes before conceding. Learning to lose well is part of life, but they really don’t get it.

Neatly segued into Lord of the Rings: Duel for Middle Earth. Only one play with a colleague and I’m on the fence, we’re due a replay today. Maybe it’s we’re both way to familar with OG duel? The only thing that remains realIy is the card draft. Otherwise it’s three staright races, with a slight emphasis on the miltary board.

Games Night!

Nyakuza 4 player, really good fun. Tight race, won by someone who collected coins and then hammered the auctions in later rounds. Good game, but could be doing with everything being 20% larger for clarity

Free Ride: USA I rode around the western seaboard whilst the other players got entangled in the eastern side. Good fun, nice simple train game with the usual procedural winkles found in 2F spiele games.

A more violent experience than I am used to, even with 2 player card games …

Yeah I’ve had lots of players assume that’s the method until the first time people leave and have to split the treasure - I guess it feels more intuitive? Although I’m used to the “correct” rules.

One variant I play with (depending on what version you’ve got) is that in my copy of Diamant it contains cards that you flip simultaneously to declare “I’m going home” or “I’m continuing into the cave”, but I saw someone suggest a different method that I think(?) is based on older versions. Instead of using the stay/continue cards we just place the meeple in our hand if we want to leave, all hold our closed fists in the middle of the table and open hands on the count of 3.
Any meeples that hit the table mean people are leaving. It’s a much more fun reveal that having to look around the table at everyone’s cards, especially if more people leave than expected!

Yeah, we don’t use the cards, we just simultaneously reveal thumbs up or down to the question of “continue?”

I imagine the hyper-competitive would be able to game that with a slow reveal, but it’s not an issue for a family game.

Me as well. I wonder if SU&SD explained the rules wrong in their review and that is how we all got the wrong idea in our head?
