Wot are you playing (video games)

Been playing a mix of games.

On Switch I played and finished Luigi’s Mansion 3 a couple of months ago. Which is a bit of a misnomer because it takes place in a hotel, but whatever. It was fun, not particularly difficult or anything, but definitely a cute game. I have not found all the Boos, but I’m not all that interested in spending the time trying to do so.

I played a bit more Metal Gear Solid 2, but wanted to do something different, so started up Star Wars: Outlaws on the PS5, which is Ubisoft’s open world SW game. I’ve been really enjoying it so far. I think the best comparison I can make for it is a SW version of Red Dead Redemption. There’s a lot of exploration available as you ride around on your speeder, but also missions to get money. As you perform some tasks you unlock new skills, and can also get upgrades for your blaster, speeder, and spaceship, as well as outfits and charms that can give you some bonuses. Plus you have Nyx, your little pet, which you can use to open doors, fetch items, pick pockets, trigger explosives, attack and distract enemies, and even cheat at cards. Good fun, and just a few bugs so far, though I waited for some time before starting the game, so I’d like to think they’d have most of them cleaned up by now.

On my Meta Quest, I’ve been playing In Death: Unchained and Iron Man VR. In Death boils down to an archery game where you are either preventing an invasion of Heaven, or cleaning out Purgatory, depending on which mode you play in. One thing I don’t particularly like about it is the teleportation movement. You shoot an arrow to move, warping to where it lands, although thankfully they were smart enough to not drop you off ledges or anything if you miss your intended target. There is also a sort of “quick step” item you can fling and warp a couple steps to whichever direction you throw it. Good for a fast dodge. The physics feel a little wonky, as slight alterations to how you hold the controller can have a massive effect on where the arrow goes, but I do like that it measures your arm length so that when you pull the “string” back further, the arrow does travel further and faster, just like it would in reality. Still, feels really crappy to be shooting at an enemy and keep missing it by an inch again and again as you try to adjust your aim as it shuffles towards Heaven’s gate. And it really tires out your bow holding arm, as you have it extended a lot as you play.

I’m not too far into Iron Man, but it’s been fun as well. I get a bit frustrated during the “cutscenes”, as you trigger them by standing on the provided icons, at which point you can’t move anymore, though you can look around. The number of times I’ve wanted to move just a little bit closer to something for a better look, but you can’t… Just annoying. The actual gameplay sections are pretty cool, as flying around in the armor is incredibly entertaining, though I’m still getting used to maneuvering as your hands need to be angled in just the right way or you might accidentally ascend when you’re just trying to go straight. Then when needing to shoot you need to have your palms out for the repulsors, and if you don’t have them out enough, it goes to secondary weapons, which for me at the moment are smart missiles that take a chunk of time to reload, so it sucks when I fire them accidentally. Meanwhile, I’m falling because I’m not using the repulsors to fly! There is a way to hover, but in the middle of action I’m forgetting to activate it. Still, it’s been very enjoyable so far, and I’m just to chapter 4 out of 12, so a ways to go yet.

The remaster looks pretty great, but I’m not paying £50 for a game I already bought in 2006 (and again later cheap on steam)

That was exactly my thought - I’ll wait a couple of years till it’s sub £20.

It (Oblivion Remastered) is on Gamepass, thankfully, so I’ll be giving it a go - as is the excellent Atomfall (which I’m getting towards the end of now) and Blue Prince - I’m not particularly trying to sell anyone on Gamepass but I’m very pleased to have it this month, been some really excellent games on it recently.

I haven’t had much chance to try Blue Prince because of Atomfall, but I really, really enjoyed the 4 playthroughs I have done so far. Looking forward to exploring more.

I would offer a countervailing opinion which is that I really thought the tile drafting side of the game would appeal to my boardgaming instincts but I have actually found it extremely shallow. Most tiles don’t have any mechanical effect, things don’t combo very much, it doesn’t really tell you when tiles have special location criteria for being available to draft, and there’s (early on, anyway) very sparse availability of item-based upgrades and they don’t stay between days.

The puzzling seems pretty good so far, but I am not sure it meshes that well with the tile drafting part, and as I say, I am not impressed with the tile drafting itself. Which is very much the side the game puts front and center for easily several runs before puzzles start to become identifiable.

That, or something similar, seems to be a common complaint among new players. It is of course entirely possible the game just isn’t for you, but: maybe your complaints are rooted in a lack of (current) knowledge about the system?

If you know everything there is to know, it’s possible to reach room 46 on day 1. That implies to me that the core is not as shallow as you think it is. Or maybe you can just interpret that as evidence that success is random.

I don’t think anyone actually gets there on day 1 on a first playthrough though, as that’s not how the game is intended to be experienced. The drafting rules, unlocks, and manipulation are part of the exploration and puzzling.

I am aware that it’s possible, there’s an achievement for it. But to me that doesn’t say that the tile drafting system is robust and deep, it says that there is a puzzle to getting there that doesn’t rely on mechanical unlocks. And like I say, the puzzle side of the game seems pretty good, it’s just not what the game leads with and it sure feels at this stage (having done a few of the cross-room puzzles with permanent unlocks) like the tile stuff might well get in the way of that more than it enhances it.

Anyway, I don’t want to argue about the holistic experience of a game with a lot left for me to uncover, but I think it’s a game that could absolutely start off on a better foot whether or not the game as a whole is worthwhile. (And I am willing to give it more time, at a minimum.) I also personally immediately enjoyed it more once I had a bit more direction in the form of some basic hints, in distinct contrast to many recommendations I have seen to go in blind.

(If anyone else is wondering whether or not to go into Blue Prince blind: do. As someone who constantly worried I was missing something obvious or being denied essential information, I was pleased to find the in-game information a robust and interesting way to help you through, without giving stuff away.)

I will say - it is pretty good about having clues to many of the big puzzles… if you draft the right room to get the clues. And it is easy to go a long time without that sort of support and making no progress whatsoever. I think it’s better to have hints and a sense of direction.

Now that I have those things and am making actual progress I am having a vastly better time. But I still have a sour taste in my mouth from the initial experience.

I found some lovely juicy story bits in a room I was forced to draft and otherwise wouldn’t have gone for. For some reason that worked extremely well for me. Am enjoying so far.

Oh heck, now Expediton 33 is about to drop on Gamepass and I’ve heard some extremely good things about it. Argh I need more hours.

Game Pass has some really great games right now… but where to take the time from for all of them?

Got Game Pass to take a look at the new remastered Elder Scrolls, and Atomfall. Got 2 weeks for $1, enough time to check them both out. So far - a bit meh. They look nice, but I’m finding I don’t have the patience for that style of game anymore.

Also tried out Blue Prince, which seems very cool.

Into day 5 of Blue Prince and thoroughly enjoying so far. Each run so far has had a very cool ‘a ha!’ moment for one reason or another. I can’t expect that to happen every run and I’m sure I’ll get frustrating runs too (I can see the randomness screwing you over however much information you’ve gleaned) but it’s been a blast so far. I’ve started every run so far excited to try a new idea or solve a new mystery.

17 days of Blue Prince now, and whilst yes it can be frustrating when the drafting isn’t kind, I have actually still had ‘a-ha’ moments in all but one run. It’s very good at unfolding when you think there isn’t much left. Still greatly enjoying it.

I “finished” it last weekend. It’s an excellent game but think I’m happy to call it a day after only 2 additional runs.it did take me till day 32 to get to room 46. I had some very unfortunate luck with the RNG gods.

After dipping back into Skyrim (stealth archer is still the way to go) I bought Legend of Grimrock 2 for £4 on steam.

Also, steam currently has the Mass Effect legendary edition (1, 2 and 3) for £4.99, so get on that.

I am somewhere in the late 20s. I have solved a few of the room puzzles, found quite a few clues, seen a few rooms, found some unexpected stuff… but it barely ever comes together in a satisfying combination.

I find the game slow and the RNG too much for my liking. If the game played faster … but there is deliberate slowing down built f.e. in waiting for logging into the network on the terminals or just the startup sequence for a new day…

I managed to reach the top row a couple of times but …

I find the game more frustrating than anything.

My partner says some of the streamers he watches have spent a lot of time on it… certainly more than a single play through and keep talking how much depth there is and how they keep finding new stuff. So far I must say the speed at which I find new stuff has dramatically slowed down after the first 10 days.

I think I might just be bad or too lazy solving the puzzles.

So will I continue? Probably for a bit I am not someone to let a puzzle remain unsolved. But I likely gripe and complain while I solve it.

The Roottrees are Dead. If you want a great detective / puzzle game like Return of the Obra Dinn or The Case of the Golden Idol then this is the right one. I play it with my wife and it is a lot of fun finding things out together.

You are hired to find out the identities of a whole family by searching the internet and reading documents in a 90s setting.

It is really good
