Wot are you playing (video games)

From this I bought the console edition of stellaris, while it was on sale. Wish me luck (if I can boot the kids off the tv).

So disappointed in Valheim.

Spent ages building a base only for it not to be far enough away from a Dark Forest area so a troll turned up and smashed it to bits in seconds (even though I’d surrounded it with thick fence stakes).

2nd boss is so far away that you have to go by boat, but there’s nowhere to land except in higher-level zones where you’re one-shot killed and can’t retrieve your equipment.

It’s just not balanced well enough to make me want to invest more time. (Have bought Enshrouded instead).

Just finished Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Really enjoyed it, despite it very obviously bearing scars of a troubled development history.

Think I’m going to take a break from playing anything with a big narrative for a while. So although I just got Spider-Man 2 and Life is Strange: Double Exposure, I doubt I’ll play them much yet (same for BG3 and various other stuff I still haven’t finished like Horizon: Zero Dawn).

Maybe I’ll just play some Marvel’s Midnight Suns (another Christmas gift) or Potionomics.

Good luck! I’ve not played the console version but I love the PC game. A steep learning curve but I think the tutorial is pretty good

I finally got Baldur’s Gate 3 and it seems it is what I hoped it to be though I am not very far in. Had first to get to know the rule system because a lot changed since BG2.

Also bought Doorkickers 2 because why not. I am getting it for sure at some point (it is in EA right now), loved the first game a lot.

My brother-in-law got me a PlayStation Portal for Christmas, which hadn’t even been on my radar, but is proving itself to be just what I needed. It is a dedicated remote player for a PS5 (and with PS+ Premium, you can stream some games from the cloud, but that is currently in beta). I have commented before how my Switch was getting more use simply because I could carry it around and use it without needing to monopolize a television.

This allows me the same freedom, so I can actually play my PS5 games while watching the kids in the living room. Just finished Metal Gear Solid 2 which I started much earlier this year (though I will be replaying for some trophies).

Well, ignore what I just said, as I ended up getting sucked into playing a bunch of BG3.

Accidentally ended up romancing Shadowheart, even though I’d been intending to go for Lae’zel or Karlach. :woman_shrugging:

Then Gale got weirdly mopey about it, even though I don’t think I’d given him any indication I even liked him. So when he started demanding another magic item to eat, I kicked him out of the party for good.

My partner and I decided to finally play Baldur’s Gate 3 to see in the new year. My paladin rushed over to help in a fight that her tiefling started.

It turns out they were innocent. I lost my paladinhood and, quite soon after, was murdered by hobbits in a grubby pit.

Wonderful new year!

I’m glad I’m not the only one stumbling around getting things wrong.

I just finished Baldur’s Gate 3 last night!

First time I played I managed to get to the end of Act 1 as a Ranger before I remembered that I don’t really like Rangers in 5th Ed. Too fiddly.

Second playthrough and I got to the end of Act 2 as a Paladin before getting very frustrated having to bring Asterion everywhere. He’s fine, but his constant whining about me being a goody-goody was annoying.

Third, and final, playthrough I got all the way to the end as a Bard (high Dex so I could Sleight of Hand all those locks and traps myself, thank you very much). I finished… 95% of everything? A few minor quests I didn’t finish but I did all the main characters’ quest lines, and I think I did right by everyone except possibly Wyll because I romanced Karlach and I think they would’ve been happier together than with one of them with me.

I should’ve gone for Shadowheart. She’s my favourite. Ah well.

Still, very satisfying conclusion, and a nice little post-credit vignette (after some INSANELY long credits).

And now my one complaint: Why is the level cap only 12!? It should be at least 16. The final fight at Level 12 was still very, very hard (which, fine, but there is enough experience from sidequests that I did to get you to at least 14… and I didn’t do everything, just almost everything). I hate level caps.

Other than that? Great game.

I am now tackling Deathloop, which is… fascinating. I can see how doing the same day over and over again might grow old, but for now I’ve just reached the end of the tutorial, and I’m curious to keep going for at least a few more loops, see if I can unpack this puzzle. A recommendation from John Scalzi (not directly to me, sadly, but he mentioned in his lastest book, “Starter Villain,” that he had a lot of fun with the game, and I can see why. Snappy writing.)

Oh, and Witch Spring R, which I have no idea why it’s called that. Very cute game, but… a lot of killing things? I’m curious about the tonal variation currently on display… hyper-hyper cute, but the first mission has you killing rabbits by shooting a bow at their heads, and then killing mercenaries that wander into your forest?

Maybe I’m just reading too much into it.

Stellaris is currently VERY cheap on Steam.
Should I get it? Are there any expansions which are essential?

I love it. None of the expansions are essential but they make it fun to revisit the game. Whether it’s for you depends on how much you like complex 4x games and space opera.

I’m currently working through some YouTube tutorials so it seems well supported in terms of material to learn the game.

I finished Deathloop. About 20 hours from start to (one of three) finish.

It was pretty good! Desperately needs a Save feature, but otherwise was a solid FPS with some neat powers. I basically only used 2 (Aether, which turns you invisible and the one that lets you jump around).

I might have to replay the part with the Devouring of the Lambs. But satisfying.

Now to finish Assassins Creed Valhalla

I finally gave in and started Baldur’s Gate 3, largely because my partner was keen to play too so we thought we’d try a co-op version of the game. It works brilliantly, and the game is, of course, great, but if you wish to try this yourself, a handy tip…

When you ask your partner what they’re playing, and they say ‘I think I might be a priest,’ assuming from there that you’re okay to play a paladin without checking exactly who they are a priest of is a really, really good way to become an oathbreaker paladin. Sigh.

I don’t think I’m really what people would call a video game player. Certainly pretty sure I’m not what video game players would call a video game player.

The last two games I’ve played (indeed the only two games I play much) are Wii Sports Resort and Forza Horizon 4.

(I say ‘play much.’ I play them sometimes.)

and I spend most of the week end building a new ONI base because my old one wasn’t good enough. this map seed is not great though the steam vent is too close while no natural gas is close.

I have built a 3kg/s SPOM (self powered oxygen module) and now I have the weird problem that I don’t know what to do with so much oxygen, solution not included (this was after the screen)

I got lucky with my Dreckos and got shiny plastic producing ones before cycle 100. first time ranching hatches in a while, I had forgotten they convert dirt into coal.

And I still don’t know how to cool my base

And this time I have too little power. the SPOM selfpowers but 2 coal generators is barely enough for the base.

Caves of Qud consumes me. I die often, my tombstones populate the local cemetery. Time passes without notice. I die some more. I have not gone very far, at least when I have been able to control where I am going. Last night (early this morning) I was in a mysterious temple with no idea how I got there. I died again.

10/10 Would die again
