Wot are you playing (video games)

Started the free god of war Valhalla dlc my word that is quite the Christmas gift. I would happily have paid money for this and if anyone has the game do not sleep on this, it’s a whole story continuation and hades structure x gow combat.

Also saw that it’s 10% off baldurs gate 3, gonna try to resist till it comes down in price a bit more.

Steam sale got me too, got Warhammer: Chaps Gate and Phasmophobia but haven’t had a chance to try either yet.

I don’t know if it was deliberate or auto correct having fun, but after Chaps in the Old World on another thread, I think I’d like to see what this alternative setting is like…

Probably a lot like this.

So I bought some games in the last weeks, using sales and coupons especially on Epic Store:

Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew another Mimimi Games game, unfortunately their last because the German studio closed now (apparently it wasn’t about being unsuccessful but more about the stress level and work life balance).
But if you loved Commandos series, Desperados series, Shadow Tactics Blades of the Shogun or the few other games in that style, you will really enjoy this one too. It is offers the same great gameplay but adds a ton on top of it, making it also kinda an open world game, adding more playable characters and you can choose who to bring. It is really neat. I love the puzzles the game presents and how I can solve them, the freedom and creativity it gives me.

Against the Storm: I heard a lot about it, it recently left Early Access, a roguelike city builder which sounded like a very interesting combination. And all in all (epic wallet and 33% coupon) I paid 10€ for it on Epic Store which sounded very fair. It is fun though more complicated than I thought but it feels like you will figure things out by just playing even though I felt like playing without full knowledge but it wasn’t needed to win that mission. I guess they teach me or I figure out stuff as I progress through it. I also don’t know how much really the roguelike factor comes in, I only played some hours. Beside that it felt like a normal city builder in a fantasy setting with some new things. I like building cities

Warhammer 40k: Chaos Gate - Daemonhunters: I had an eye on that for a long time, XCOM like game without hit percentages which I am happy about because I like less randomness. 12€ was a great price too, so went for it but haven’t tried it yet. Still busy with the other games.

1,5 months ago I bought Elden Ring because I was curious and I played like 5 hours and I enjoyed it though I also feel like I didn’t make real progress. It just feels huge and like I have to dive in and play it a lot to learn the game. And right now I am not sure I have the time / energy for that. Maybe over the holidays now…

I also would like to go back to Jagged Alliance 3 and do another run and do things differently. There is enough content for that and they added new quests and other things since the last time I played

Doing a 2ns run through of RDR2. Gonna see how different it is being a nasty bastard…

PlayStation provided their annual “Year-End Review” which showed that I played 299 hours of PlayStation this year, which in the grand scheme of things does not sound like all that much. I will have that over 300 before the end of the year, certainly, but still shows how little time for video games I have nowadays.

I just checked mine and I played 27 hours

Playing Sea of Stars as my holidays game. About 3 hours in so far.

Really impressed with it. Has the Chronotrigger feel about it. Old school feels with a lot of modern touches.

  • It does that annoying thing of “turn based, but with real time events as part of attacks so the player can’t just switch off”. Sure, fine I guess.
  • To reduce need for items, attacking generate MP. It does sometimes create weird situations where you use small enemy fights as a way of healing your party, since if you don’t do that you really chug through all your healing items (and can die very easily, so the game incentivises it pretty heavily)
  • Attacks and parties generate a combo meter, which can be spent on big attacks or on healing the whole party. A lot of the time I’m using them to heal though because there aren’t many efficient ways to heal early on, especially if the whole party is being hit.
  • Vanilla attacks release mana which can be used to give future attacks elemental damage. This creates quite a cool economy between attacks and magic.
  • Enemy signature attacks come with a little slot machine of attack/elemental types. If you can hit with all those icons before the enemy can attack, it stuns the enemy. If you hit with some of them, it reduces the power of the enemy attack. Sometimes it’s impossible to hit with all the correct types, but it does create some incentive not to just hammer on the enemies one by one and lining up when to use magic and when to use charged attacks is a cool efficiency engine. When you line everything up to disrupt the enemy it feels good.
  • For a JRPG, save points are quite frequent. Lots of levels looping back on themselves or providing access to a save point after major puzzles, so it’s probably only 15min max between saves so far. There’s also some auto-saving in corridors (auto-saving in a JRPG dungeon?! Crazy!). But because of the minor enemies doing quite a bit of damage it is useful. And I appreciate it doesn’t have that JRPG anxiety of thinking you need to leave the house soon but can’t find a save point.

The writing is pretty sharp without being annoying and it has a decent pace to it. So far thumbs up.

I finally finished my first run of BG3! It was great and ended well (granted the combat wasn’t that challenging on balanced by the end…). I did get a bit fatigued in the late game and skipped the whole Raphael quest, but I was cool with that. I’ll try it on my second play on tactician (which I’ve already started - a good sign).

I’ve also started Dave the Diver, which is so far quite charming and a bit off the wall. I’m looking forward to the true wackiness to really hit.

I should also finish my playthrough of Pathfinder:Wrath of the Righteous, which I paused for BG3. I want to finish it, if for no other reason than to see how the heck it comes together by the end! I’m terrible at going back to games after a pause without starting over…

I bought the Assassin’s Creed Ezio Collection for my Switch, as it is a lot easier to find time to play a handheld over a standard console. I forgot how good these games are! I finished 2 already and am early into Brotherhood now. The graphics are nothing great by today’s standards, but they are fine. The voice work is fantastic though, and I am really enjoying going back through the story.

On PS5, I finished the first Spider-Man game and am now working my way through the DLC, which I have not played before. Want to get through this and move on to the Metal Gear Solid Collection.

Now that the Homecoming server has been given official approval by NCSoft, I’m back playing City of Heroes MMO.

It has the best character designer ever, which also has a game attached to it. My giant robot (Heroic Bot JJ) and street fighter martial artist (Rick Justice) are ready to “arrest” bad guys on the streets of Paragon City once again (by punching them repeatedly in the face and firing lasers at them).

I’ve been sinking into this too! Great fun so far. I haven’t actually played before but I’m impressed that it feels less MMO-ey than Champions online did.

Only playing intermittently but enjoying it lots.

I remember playing City of Heroes way way back - it was pretty good fun

I think winning a costume contest was the most fun I had with city of heroes. Tried some roleplaying too, but just couldn’t sink enough time into it to develop an identity that enough other people would remember and interact with.

The game part of the game I barely remember - there wasn’t much too it, iirc.

I’ve been playing some Conquest of Elysium 5 while trying to learn how to play Dominions 6. CoE5 is janky and random, but exploring the world is fun. I managed to summon and not be killed by Yog-Sothoth last game. Dominions 6 is janky and ridiculous. I designed Yog-Sothoth as my pretender god and set about turning the world insane. They are set in the same world, and have some factions in common, but CoE5 you might start as a high cultist, while D6 you start as a wannabe god.

I hadn’t heard of either of these but they look right up my alley! I might try some of the earlier versions if they’re a little cheaper to see if I like them.

I’ve been collecting weird achievements in Slipways…

Bots are mostly needed to produce food… … took 2 attempts.
The Undo one also took 2 attempts.

CoE5 is sufficiently old that it’s 50% off pretty regularly. D6 is brand new, so D5 gets about 50% off regularly.

If you get CoE5, I highly recommend installing the simple mod that gives everyone stationary ballista in their starting location, so you can play without the game ending very early and abruptly.

Whenever I get to play something right now, I go for Against the Storm. The way they built roguelike elements in a city builder is genius. Every game is different and expects you to adapt on the fly. It is really good. I am very impressed with it.

I’ve been playing Stardew Valley - I started it with the kids but they eventually got bored, I played it until the end game. It’s geuninely a great game although it defiitnely became something of a chore by the end. I’m glad it’s done and now I’m looking forward to sinking into a more meaty broth of gamey juiciness.
