What are you writing?

I haven’t written anything for three months.

ETA: except for e-mails to Jon Zeigler about his draft star system generator and posts to this forum.

Don’t you do a podcast?

Sad to hear that. The only words I have written are here.

My blocker is known to me and will be largely resolved tomorrow. I hope you can figure out a way to get around yours or at least figure it what it is.

Ooh! Ooh! Let me guess! Is it a random generator for “artifact and relic” level magic items in GURPS Dungeon Fantasy?

Yeah, but that’s in the can already. (We mention you in this episode, in fact.)

At least two of the words in that sentence could reasonably be used in a description of it.

“A” and “GURPS”. We’re starting to narrow things down.

Woohoo! I get to be a valued listener again!

Secret Project complete and to be turned in tomorrow. Resisting the urge to polish it just one more time.

Okay, I figured out the MacGuffin (an AI named OSIRIS that will be a logistics/supply AI in charge of managing the massive flow of goods up and down the space elevator, tentatively named “The Silk Ladder”). Still foggy on some of the heist details, but overall pretty happy with the outline as it is.

Going to edit up my last novel, send it off to ye olde Amazon for publishing, and then start writing this one.

I am not a big fan of editing, despite how much I believe in the process. It’s… humbling.

I’ve made a lot of progress on a scenario I’m writing with @BigJackBrass in mind. Yesterday got derailed by redoing the maps from scratch… which is not really the best use of time, since they’re not that important, but helps me to picture the place and how the different areas relate. Still got some areas to furnish, need to devise some horribly cursed magic items, the usual sort of thing - but I feel like the backbone of the work is done now.

You can probably skip those.

Oh, it’s no trouble at all, honestly!

I’m writing a third book, and the section on “Wisdom” has quotes from Aristotle, Isaac Asimov and Jimi Hendrix. Because apparently I’m turning into a parody of myself.

After a second go-round with the editor, I’m feeling a lot happier about Secret Project. (The editor makes the book better. This is my universal experience. I’ve met writers who whine over every change, but they are wrong. Not every change suggestion will be better, but even the ones that aren’t show up where you put something badly and could make it clearer.)

Finally got my hand to fiction again and I’ve managed to put down 1k words of Sam, which feels good. Definitely finding it harder to write fiction than other things recently, but I’ll try to keep it up.

Pushed Novel 7 (both ebook and paperback) to Amazon today, expect they will go live “soon”.

Going to step away from the keyboard for the day, and then back at it for Novel 8 (which originally I wanted to publish in June, but that’s… not gonna happen…) with the continued goal to get 4 novels published this year.

One down, three to go.

I am back to part 2 of the 1 novel I published… not writing but rereading the 500+ pages I have written. It is incomplete … somewhere towards the end there are a few chapters that need to be written.

I am pleasantly surprised that it is not bad. Sure language needs some editing. But 150 pages in it is almost all line editing that I have marked in red. No major revisions

Now if I can get to the point where the chapters are missing maybe I can finish this beast.

My motivation comes from a friend who read book 1 and let me know he enjoyed it

Okay, I have started Novel 8. It’s working title is now (officially unofficially?) “Starocean’s Eight.”

Basic premise is an agricultural world is invaded by an overwhelming attack from the Korinthian Republic. Our three heroes are an ace starfighter pilot (Kenzie Nishizawa) who happened to be on vacation when the attack happened, an environmental protection lawyer (Ash Rutherford) who has an eco-terrorist for a mother (head of the Tonantzin Group, or TNT Group), and a computer specialist (Vera Ahmadi) who believes that A.I. should be freed from captivity.

Their goal is to steal the AI responsible for logistics and loading on the space elevator (OSIRIS, “Offworld Shipping Information Risk Integration System”), as Kenzie believes that if they can slow down the logistics enough, the Korinthian Fleet won’t be able to progress further in their invasion against other systems, and the “big good guys” (Alliance of Free Stars, I dunno, I’ll name them later) will swoop in and rescue them from the big bads.

Heist, basically, with a few twists. Cyberpunk, but not as pessimistic as cyberpunk traditionally is.

I am 2,258 words into it so far. Goal is, as always, around 150k finished, about 175k for a first draft. And to have that finished by the end of the month (ha), or the end of July at the latest. Fun!

Anyone else have summer writing goals?

Osiris is a very good acronym.

Sort of, but unexpected househunting is getting in the way :frowning: so I’m reluctantly putting those to one side.
