Now there you have fantasy fiction; by authors who deserve to be even better known than they are.
I think that was one of the first Tim Powers I ever read - the other one being Forsake the Sky which was his first published novel (under a different title).
They’re both good - there are some scenes in Dinner… which sit with me even now. But his Last Call series (which Wikipedia now tells me is called the Fault Line Series) is brilliant.
I started with Last Call and then Drawing of the Dark and Drawing of the Dark remains a comfort read favorite
The Anubis Gates is just about the only time travel story I’ve actually enjoyed reading
Yep, I started with The Drawing of the Dark (as part of the original colour Fantasy Masterworks series) and then the Stress of Her Regard, Anubis Gates, On Stranger Tides and only recently Last Call.
I remember enjoying The Drawing of the Dark a lot, and then being impressed with just how unique every other book of his is. There’s nothing else quite like them around.
The location of Horrobin’s lair in The Anubis Gates has been tracked down, by careful analysis of the text, to the old Forbidden Planet basement.
I finished Mythical Man Month the other night. Not the most exciting bed-time reading but for a 50 year old book on software engineering it’s incredible how much stuff still resonated.
I lived about a minute’s walk from the old FP before it went, and coincidentally my front door was also the exact location of the first portal to London Below in Neverwhere. Which explains a lot, now I think about it.
I read the first Dungeon Crawler Carl book on 11 September. I just finished the most recent one, book 8. They were fun! Quick and enjoyable reads, in direct contrast to Le Morte D’Arthur that I have been slowly rereading off-and-on all year. I should get back to it if I want to finish it before the end of the year.
May I strongly recommend my friend’s collected blog series on Le Morte:
I finished The Sword of the Lictor by Gene Wolfe, book 3 of the Book of the New Sun series. Great stuff, glad I am in a book club to find a lot of the hidden stuff and meanings. It is fun to come up with theories too.
