Very common to German translations for English fantasy series.

One English paperback costs less than the German translation as paperback which includes only half the book.

That made me start reading books in English around 13-14 years ago.

I’ve finished _Red seas under red skies_, now to track down the third in Scott Lynch’s series. Then again, should I wait until it looks like he’s going to release another one so I have more to look forward to?

No.

I mean, you do you, but one of the biggest threats to any writer is people who don’t buy _this_ book because they’re waiting for _that_ book. Makes it hard for us to get contracts, makes it hard for us to pay bills, and so on.

That stated: gosh I hope he releases book 4 soon.

Plus book 3 is really good. IMO is way better than the second one (which was already good, but a step down from the original)

You could always buy it and keep it in reserve.

On the strength of Uncle Fred’s introduction, I went back and read the Wodehouse collection **Young Men in Spats**.

The Uncle Fred story was actually the one I enjoyed least. He starts strong again but is too much like Ukridge when he gets under steam as the story moves.

The Drones club stories and Mr. Mulliner stories in this one are light but diverting. Language as always is excellent. The twist in the final story about Mordred Mulliner is particularly well done and wraps very tightly. I can see how an extra five pages or so could have been strung out on it but the snappy end is particularly welcome in the last story of a collection.

I imagine these would have been even stronger in original magazine circulation. I made an effort to put the collection down for at least two days between stories to keep from wearing it out.

I’ve also read 27 collections of Knights of the Dinner Table comics in the interim. What can I say, I’m a simple man with simple tastes. Also it’s busy season and I encourage folks working long hours not to read about Stalin’s purges or the First World War. Find something light when it’s crunch time.

I find it hard to read Knights of the Dinner Table _because_ it’s true to life. I’ve met munchkinny rules lawyers like that and I didn’t enjoy playing with them. But I guess it’s a small town with only a limited number of RPGers…

KoDT strikes a fine balance in which they are doing parody behavior that’s outrageous enough that I don’t start cringing. I know folks that are similar to this but none that get this far out. I can’t see myself being the person being laughed at in situ for honestly ignorant behavior.

Notably, I’ve been reading from the start of the run which is pretty darn nostalgic for me as I clearly remember these getting passed around a table by the group I was playing with at the time.

Currently reading Proxima by Stephen Baxter, which has been on my TBR pile since I think 2013. I’m enjoying it, but it may not be a typical Baxter book, but at least I’m now inclined to buy something else from him.

This I should add is a tendency I’ve noticed in myself as I aged in life. As a teenager I would just buy books because the title or the cover caught my eye. Nowadays, I find myself prevaricating over whether to pick up an author new to me.

So far, taking a chance has worked out. Adrian Tchaikovsky also being a new author to me too. His Shards of Earth book was excellent.

February’s stack of books is all comics. Some of it is stuff I decided to re-read as it had been years (Nimona, Scott Pilgrim and Calvin & Hobbes).

That is a thing of beauty but… I feel like it assumes that you have read the material sooo many times that you can manage to read the annotation without distracting from the narrative itself.

I’ve struggled in the past with books with annotation and although I’ve enjoyed lovecraft adaptations and themes I’ve never read any of his novels.

I actually enjoy the way comics handle this by duplicating content at the end of deluxe editions with scripts/ hand annotations and preliminary sketches. I see this as a nicer way or reconciling multiple narrative voices without detracting from the natural narrative.

Although maybe it’s just my inability to not be distracted from the main text.

I started reading this during lunch breaks while WFH in the midst of the pandemic. As I returned to work those breaks to read became rarer.

Started reading Scott Lynch’s _Red Seas Under Red Skies_. I think it must be because I am already familiar with the characters and somewhat acquainted with the world, but I am finding this a lot easier to get into than _The Lies of Locke Lamora_ was. At least, for the beginning.

Been reading outside my usual genre having snagged Slow Horses by Mick Herron as a way of discovering how espionage tropes are used in today’s spy novels.

Was totally blown away by the story and writing, and I have now read all seven of the books available in paperback. Highly recommended, though warning, very British humour.
