Now _there_ you have fantasy fiction; by authors who deserve to be even better known than they are.

I think that was one of the first Tim Powers I ever read - the other one being _Forsake the Sky_ which was his first published novel (under a different title).

They’re both good - there are some scenes in _Dinner…_ which sit with me even now. But his _Last Call_ series (which Wikipedia now tells me is called the _Fault Line Series_) is brilliant.

I started with Last Call and then Drawing of the Dark and Drawing of the Dark remains a comfort read favorite

The Anubis Gates is just about the only time travel story I’ve actually enjoyed reading

Yep, I started with **The Drawing of the Dark** (as part of the original colour Fantasy Masterworks series) and then the **Stress of Her Regard** , **Anubis Gates** , **On Stranger Tides** and only recently **Last Call**.

I remember enjoying The Drawing of the Dark a lot, and then being impressed with just how unique every other book of his is. There’s nothing else quite like them around.

The location of Horrobin’s lair in _The Anubis Gates_ has been tracked down, by careful analysis of the text, to the old _Forbidden Planet_ basement.

I finished **Mythical Man Month** the other night. Not the most exciting bed-time reading but for a 50 year old book on software engineering it’s incredible how much stuff still resonated.

I lived about a minute’s walk from the old FP before it went, and coincidentally my front door was also the exact location of the first portal to London Below in Neverwhere. Which explains a lot, now I think about it.

I read the first **Dungeon Crawler Carl** book on 11 September. I just finished the most recent one, book 8. They were fun! Quick and enjoyable reads, in direct contrast to **Le Morte D’Arthur** that I have been slowly rereading off-and-on all year. I should get back to it if I want to finish it before the end of the year.

May I strongly recommend my friend’s collected blog series on **Le Morte** :

I finished **The Sword of the Lictor** by Gene Wolfe, book 3 of the Book of the New Sun series. Great stuff, glad I am in a book club to find a lot of the hidden stuff and meanings. It is fun to come up with theories too.

I was impressed by the world building in the first two so…

I was initially annoyed when the first book won the Hugo as I don’t think fantasy should win a Hugo but I read it and was delighted to discover that it isn’t fantasy. Weird science but zero magic.

I finished **Garth Marenghi’s Terrortome** , and started immediately on **Garth Marenghi’s Incarcerat**.

I thought Terrortome began amazingly, was briefly wobbly (which was either me just figuring out exactly what it _was_, or else the story needing time to get into full swing), and then it just got better and better.

I struggle with these ones, as they are (by design) badly written. Often over the top and comedically badly written, but still… I love GM to bits, but one of my favourite bits from Darkplace was the interviews, and I’d love something similar with these.

You get a bit of that from the footnotes. I wonder whether a full annotated text approach would be sustainable? I.e. where every two page spread is one page of “the book” with the accompanying page being written by some scholar – but obviously just Garth again in this case – discussing that page in an academic fashion.

I reckon it could work. The annotations could go completely off the rails for multiple pages at a time, after all, so there’d be lots of freedom.

Indeed - and Mike used to run, at least, the Forbidden Planet bookshop that it became opposite the McEwan Hall. He has been pimping me books since my teenage years and always recommends a book or 3 for me!

Yeah, I think that’s a really good idea. I think that could work.
