Oh this is clever, sounds like it would work really well for Forks
Oh yeah, Coup I definitely learn by playing.
And don’t forget Concordia where they built in a mechanic for teaching scoring on the fly! There’s a quickteach.
I always go into any game I’m playing for the first time assuming I’m going to lose and possibly badly, no matter how good the teach. Then my mission is just to do as well as I can - maybe trying a couple of clever things if I figure them out, even if they’re not necessarily optimal.
I find myself close to this view. I think winners of a first game that’s new to everyone are often about luck of who stumbled on to something and which the opponents don’t know how to counter or outscore.
For me it’s not about doing as well as I can but more exploring the space and the game levers. The aim of game one is to understand a bit about the flow and see how things are connected between game state, my actions and how they affect the other players at the table. That being said I still think a deep game will take more games to really start singing and understanding.
I would love to be able to take that approach, but all too often I fear that (if it’s not my game) I’ll never get to play it again, so want to “make the most of” my one play.
I’ll still try and make the most of the game and do as well as I can in general but I assume I WILL lose. So it doesn’t bother me if I do - and if I manage to do well, I’m more pleased!
