Either Chwazi or dropping a token to see who goes first. (Unless its a game being taught, then I agree the teacher should go first).
Tiebreakers, I don’t really mind. I’m happy with a draw.

Wow, a lot more thoughts here in what I thought would be a pretty light topic. I agree with many of you, ties aren’t a bad thing. Sometimes the tiebreaker is meaningful, like whoever accomplished the same thing with fewer actions/resources or with more juice left in the tank. Sometimes it’s less meaningful and in those cases I’d rather just tie. Sometimes it’s a real feature, like in Samurai, where you are meant to tie and the game is forcing you to meet two opposing win conditions.
Some, like Arboretum, are just plain silly and I like the laugh but that’s all it is.
Something like Pax Pamir might be best, it is actually doable but encourages another get together over another activity. Woudn’t it be something to actually have the table over to someone’s house next weekend after everyone tries to make kebabs? I can see that being really special.
This is tangential, but all of this makes me recall Dog Eat Dog, where the Colonizer role is selected as whoever at the table has the highest net worth. So uncomfortable, so precise and appropriate for the game. Really starts things off on an accurate foot.
