I’ve only done one order from their store (my FLGS has gone all-in on it, but didn’t have Shayle). I recall the shipping taking longer than I thought, with no tracking, but everything showed up nicely packaged, with a couple extra player dashboards.
I’m going to stick with my modified boxes for storage for a few more factions. I can get six warbands in the shelf space of one core box. When Gloomhaven shows up, however, things may change. I could really use one of my FLGS’s board game swap meets right about now…
Yeah I’m generally not too concerned by a lack of tracking. USPS is typically solid as a rock for shipments up to Canada. Just weird times right now so I’m less chill about things than usual. Being able to grab Shayle was a nice perk of ordering from SF directly. I could have bought about half of what I got domestically, but once I started adding to the cart I said screw it and just piled on what I wanted.
Speaking of dashboards, someone on Etsy has made really nice options, with side to hold the cards and tokens. I’m strongly considering a set (well 2 as “the boy” will need one as well, lol).
They’re not a bad price to be fair. I think it’s $22 Canadian for 3? So $44 for both sides isn’t bad, all things considered.
The overlays I’m looking at for Cthulhu Death May Die are…more.
Not really painting per se, but I have just finished working over all of the edges of the bits of terrain and scatter in Core Space with some cheapo Crayolas. It’s a bit of a conundrum because the effect would have definitely been better had I used my nice Pantone markers, but that cardboard is well cured and thirsty, and no way they’re coming into contact with that!
Anyway, it’s a bit of a mixed bag, with some pieces achieving a pronounced effect, and others leaving me wondering why I bothered. I’ll edit this post with some photos later when I get the time and light to do so, but unfortunately I didn’t have the foresight to take before shots to contrast with my afters.
It’s Varnishin’ Time for the Godtear gang. This is batch one of probably 4, and then I’ll go through and retouch with some gloss where necessary and accessible.
Until the next champion comes out, I think I’m going to unpack my Legend of DrizztAdventure system game and batch it out.
Took a break from Napoleonics to smash out a trio of Stormcast, mainly to just be able to pick up a big brush and not think too hard about the colours. Not my best or very neatly painted, but better than unpainted plastic.
Somleads to a funny coincidence. My son and I picked up our brushes for the first time since before Christmas and finished the Start Painting set I primed months ago.
We went mostly with the “recommended scheme”, as we don’t have a huge selection of colours we wanted on them, or experience with colour matching.
I am really enjoying the finish with those Scalecolor paints. They have attractive, useful colour sets in their kits, I’m going to need to jump on some to try them out. I’m happy with my contrast paints but they’re somewhat restrictive.
In my recent painting binge, I came across the technique of using Contrast Medium to give non-contrast paints some of the flow characteristics of Contrast. It also adds a little sheen, and makes wet-blending a bit easier. It’s been fun to play around with and gives the cheaper paints a bit more versatility.
Also, as a good tip, shiny floor polish is usually an extremely runny acrylic medium that dries to a gloss finish. This is useful in making washes using inks. Also a couple of drops of dishwasher rinse aid breaks the surface tension of a paint and helps it flow better. This can be useful for making washes that don’t stain flat surfaces as much, and for flow improvement in an airbrush.
As a bonus they are both cheap for huge quantities!
And the whole Godtear gang is painted and protected. I’m happy enough with all of them, especially as this was a return to painting after a long hiatus, and with greater focus. I’m particularly fond of my Totally 90’s Halftusk and Hippie Hippie Shayle and the Mud Golem.
Black undercoat. Airbrush NMM style grey/blue/white highlights. Super thin coat of scalecolor black metal. Highlights and edges with well thinned scalecolor heavy metal. Tiny dots of scalecolor speedmetal.
I’d been planning to practise NMM on it, but green and purple overspray left me with a choice of masking and redoing or improvising. I have a huge backlog of models so figured just get it done and do NMM on the next one!
