The resurrected miniatures painting and showing off thread

Today’s WIP. Got a couple other planes base coated in blue as well.

[EDIT] Ran out of gas (light) right before the finish line. :sob:

[DOUBLE EDIT]

It’s done and just waiting for a quick spray of varnish. Minor update from the last, but a complete one. I knew I was going to be able to apply a bunch of (hard learned) lessons from my last one, but I’m flabbergasted by how much of an impact those lessons have made. Thrilled with this guy! Still, a few lessons learned here too.

Slow progress on these WIP

Far too many 3d prints needing paint. Got 5 full build plates waiting to print too. I have a problem.

This weekend’s work (fun).

I needed to capture the essence of a character who was once a beautiful creature, but had been transformed into a “horrific, bloated, monstrosity” by his sister, so he could be used as a weapon to kill his brother. It took a lot of the early 2000’s Nu Metal Playlist, but I think I got there…

A Hsien with HMG joins the ranks of my Yu Jing. 12 of the 14 from my 2 starter sets done now. Looking forward to getting that chunk complete.

I’m looking to explore spray primer again, after leaving it behind due to some unpredictable chalky, grainy texture gunked up some projects. Does anyone swear on any certain brand? I generally prime white or light grey, if that makes a difference.

When I’ve seen this sort of thing mentioned elsewhere, people say “humidity”. So I pass that on for what it’s worth.

I always think GW sprays are the best. They are so fine, and importantly they thin as they dry so don’t obscure details. Whenever I see people’s models done with cheaper alternatives I always wince at the heaviness of the grain in the sprays.

I sometimes use Army Painter for the colours, but find I need to be careful as it’s easy for them to clog and obscure details. Uniform Grey of theirs is the main grey undercoat I use Sort of mid grey.

All automotive ones, to me, are not worth the saving. I got some undercoated figures from ebay with some £5 spray used in them and it was a horrible painting experience. So chunky the paint just didn’t flow on to them from the brush :face_vomiting:

Tiger Soldier done. Only the Ninja from Ref Veil and bith starters are done. Although I’m yet to build the ninja so that’ll take a while probably.

Next up a Kanren who’s already started

I can certainly vouch for Citadel black, but I’m less keen on their grey, and explicitly hate their Wraithbone (I hate Wraithbone out of a pot as well. Worst off-white ever). Army Painter sprays do the job, but they definitely take added care to get them to apply nicely. All sprays are heavily affected by air quality, so wait for the right day.

What don’t you like about Wraithbone?

I find it’s a terribly mucky paint that doesn’t behave well, no matter how you try to tame it. I’ll always go for another off-white. [EDIT] Until my rattlecan is finished. The pot of it is effectively kept around as a reminder to seek another paint.

A collection of various advice that has been passed onto me. A powdery finish can be from spraying too far away. The paint is drying in the air before it reaches the model, but with just enough moisture to stick. Humidity can also mess it up, as can a gunked up nozzle or insufficient rattling to shake up the paint and adhesive. Normally wise to sacrifice a little spray on some paper as a test before using in anger on your minis.

Finished the bikes

Man, those tires look proper gnarly, what an awesome finish! They look just caked on with rubble-muck.

Very kind. Vallejo pigments stuck with airbrush thinner

Not a ton of painting this week. I started work on my ground assets for Aeronautica Imperialis, but otherwise most of my limited hobby time has been spent assembling.

Hopefully this isn’t too much of an overshare, but I’ve long grappled with mental health issues and I’m at a particularly low point at the moment (due to several different stressors and don’t worry, I’m right on top of all this clinically). I’m finding the assembly process highly therapeutic. There’s something about the meticulous tedium of clipping, cleaning and assembling the models that really seems to help draw a razor focus, and because it’s so mindless it almost becomes meditative.

Notably, I don’t get this with painting. Even though I find it pleasing and calming, it’s also a far more active process, so it doesn’t seem to have the same distinct impact for me. I’m also sure the fact that these are aircraft models (for which I have massive childhood nostalgia) helps.

Anyway, it’s been a productive week as a result, and I’ve got one or more of (nearly) each plane, plus the aforementioned ground assets ready for paint. I have invested hard into this game, so I think my wallet knew what this was doing for me long before my brain did. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

[EDIT] Obligatory pics.

[DOUBLE EDIT] ROFL, my goodness these things are tiny. Freaking moiré pattern for scale.

Painted 2 more over the weekend. The Kanren looks tons better in the flesh than the photo. The Ambassador was really fun to paint.

I got the airbrush work done on a Yan Huo so that’ll be next and also started building the remaining 5 I currently own. As Saturday was my only day’s work for the month too it was a productive weekend

Edit: don’t know why the pics uploaded sideways. Oh well, tilt your heads or screens

There are at least three different ways of setting the orientation of an JPEG image to be other than what the sensor saw. Two of them are understood here. :frowning:

Finally got back to finishing this last batch of Yu Jing models (sorry for everyone else in the thread for getting the same Infinity models from two different painters… but at least you can compare talented painting by EnterTheWyvern to my half-assing it!)

Now off to my first online English course (Shakespeare Histories and Tragedies). Assuming the technical stuff gets sorted.

Woo. I hate online learning… :frowning:
