My list is so small

Backing

The Lacerda filler mentioned in the news on the mothership based on Lisboa
An 18xx at a sensible price

I’m not really into miniatures or DOAM so a lot of KS is a straight no for me. Pax Pamir was tempting but I’m not keen on spending 70 quid on something that probably won’t get played often.

I think the most affordable (other than the freely available PnP titles) 18xx game I can think of is 1861/1867. Pre-orders are still available.

I’m unsure how shipping and fee-structures work for you, though.

EDIT:

If you have FLGS or OGS in your vicinity with good prices for GMT games, consider 1862: Railway Mania in the Eastern Counties (which is a heckava 18xx game; often described with terms such as “bonkers” - it’s a bit of a kitchen sink offering with both full-capitalization and incremental-capitalization (usually games offer one or the other), 3 types of trains (usually games have 1 or 2 types; most only have 1), mergers (some games are notable exclusively because they have mergers and no other interesting things).)

And, of course, GMT’s biggest 18xx success has been 1846: Race for the Midwest (a Thomas Lehmann game). It’s between print-runs right now and very difficult to find; but when the next printing happens, it’ll be easy to find.

I’ll get in on this.

  • Roll Player big box and Fiends and Familiars expansion (on its way)

Looks like I won’t be the numbers-leader in 18xx titles around here after August!

What’s the best way to search KS for boardgames? I find it a very fiddly site unless I have an exact title

I have never backed anything on Kickstarter…

That said, I’m game. If there’s anything out there at the moment a) really worth the money (probably), and b) sub £40, let me know. Who doesn’t love getting new stuff in the post?

I watch this thread (and formerly it’s ancestor thread on the other forum, may it rest in peace) and I tend to subscribe to the Prelaunched Kickstarter project GeekList as well as the semi-annual Live Kickstarter Project GeekLists (they typically run one for Jan-Jun and a second Jul-Dec every year; there’s a metalist that you can subscribe to to get notified of the new ones)

I also take note of interesting Kickstarter creators and “follow” them so I get email notifications about when they create or back a project.

But, as is my approach with the news media, I tend to think, “If the people I know aren’t talking about it, it’s probably not worth talking about” - so this thread by itself may suffice (depending on your preferences)

It is a handy thread. I’ve just got FOMO!

The Mystic Vale guy already has a cube tower game using the same card crafting system from Mystic Vale.

The story is he supposedly came up with Edge of Darkness first but the publishers thought it was too big and complicated and weren’t willing to invest in the card crafting system plus all the other stuff for it. So he came back with Mystic Vale as a budget game for the card crating to prove it would work. A lot of the artwork is re-used between the two games.

I’m pretty interested in Dead Reckoning, too. Edge of Darkness is pretty good but a little overly-fiddly and games can go over long with too much down time because of that. I’m hoping maybe this will be a little more streamlined.

I’m also subscribed to the Prelaunch Kickstarter and Current Kickstarter (metalist) lists on BGG. That’s how I get probably 90% of what I know.

Look at that! You’re already in the lead!

Though, given the chance, I’d take that 18OE box and put it on my shelf instead of yours…

Mostly I wouldn’t. Threads like this or the one in Traditional Games on SomethingAwful are the way to go, IMO. There are constant Kickstarter projects but in my experience the ones that are most exciting generally get people posting about them. Just browsing the site I usually find very little of interest. And that’s me, mister 31 pending boardgame Kickstarter backs (and that doesn’t count the few dozen similarly outstanding RPG projects I’ve backed, or the couple videogames, etc.)

Now that I’ve backed a bunch of stuff, I’ll usually also get newsletters or project updates about new stuff from creators I’ve already supported. But if you just want to get running - discussion.

I’m looking at Dead Reckoning with cautious optimism. Even with Mystic Vale—which I’ve only played digitally, mind—seems like it would be too fiddly with all the sleeving and unsleeving, etc. What I’m hoping is that he’s got some kind of hook to make all that effort worthwhile (or mitigate it somewhat, somehow), as I’m a big fan of his other games without the card-craft mechanic. I want a reason to buy in and Edge of Darkness was not it.

I think I read a post where it seemed to suggest the thematic links to the rules makes it easier. So here’s hoping that 3.7 complexity rating is overstated

I keep backing things, looking at my bank balance, thinking about if I really, really need it and backing out. Frosthaven, Canvas, Railroad Ink, Nemesis,… loads!

And I don’t really regret it actually. My collection is pretty damn good now, and it’s gonna have to be something really special before I pull that trigger.

Pre-KS news for Rallyman GT/DIrt. Facebook link, sorry, so text is below.

Full text of announcement

Rallyman: Dirt is making a comeback! Holy Grail Games will be bringing a brand new edition of this classic roll and move rally game by Jean-Christophe Bouvier to Kickstarter this July.

After the success of Rallyman: GT, this new edition will be taking Rallyman back to its roots, combining the original Rallyman from 2009 and its Dirt expansion into one lean, mean rally game. Players will be up against the clock, attempting to complete each stage of the circuit as quickly as possible. The player with the best time wins!

The new edition will feature gorgeous new artwork - including this beautiful cover by Loïc Muzy - and upgraded components, while including classic mechanics such as jumping, skidding, and cutting corners from the original game. The large rectangular map sections of its predecessor have been replaced with hexagonal tiles to allow players to recreate iconic tracks from the first game, or put together their own unique circuits.

The response we’ve had for Rallyman: GT has been amazing, and since then, we’ve been hard at work trying to grow the community with online events, forums, and the Rallyman newsletter: “Flat Out!”. With this new edition of Rallyman: Dirt, we hope to grow the community even more by honouring a truly iconic game!

We’ll have more information for you over the coming weeks, so stay tuned !
