Recent Boardgames (Your Last Played Game Volume 2)

It might be a translation difference in the manual. On the back page of the English one it says:

For your personal display, only use the red player-specific components and, additionally, the blue worker discs.

No you are right. I only read about how each color deals with the shares of the other color and because it had been a while I didn’t remember I should only use red shares. Well, that just means I have to play again  I’m glad I posted a picture I would never have known.

Instead of returning to Nusfjord immediately I took a little walk in the woods in my newly acquired tiny Rosenberg Fairy Trails

It’s a beautiful little two player puzzle tile layer with a nice solo mode. I think this is the type of game I want to take on vacation because it has next to no footprint. I enjoyed the puzzle, this is the type of thing I can play endlessly.

So played power rangers heroes of the grid today with the two kids.

A fair amount of quarterbacking and the game lasted about 15 minutes too long for them (even with a colouring in break in between, they’re 7 & 3). But all in all a success.

Interesting enough wee game. Decent co-op with a kid friendly theme that’s enough for me to avoid playing snap or some other dinosaur equivalent and keep them engaged. Ordered the giant mega Zord so hope to get it out again for another round soon.

My partner and I took The Estates for a trial run this morning. We didn’t have much in the way of expectations, being a bidding game and all, but it seems like there’s a pretty compelling 2-player experience in here! It’s fragile as hell (punctuated by the catastrophic way our game ended), but I think with more experience that would become less of a wild issue and more of a constant threat to beware of (Inis and Pax Pamir at 2P come to mind).

Really an unexpected result! We had intended just to see the game play out, and found ourselves in a tense little chess match!

I’ve only ever played Estates, The once at 3-player and then once at 2-players. The 3-player experience was way better (so if you liked it at 2-player, just wait!)

Oh believe me, the group dynamic is precisely what I’m really excited for—and this one goes into the ā€œwith the folksā€ pile, which is an especially treasured corner of the game closet. Still, with so much of my game time spent with just my partner (especially recently), it was nice to find we have a reason to play this one together after today.

Played with the 5-year-old yesterday:

Jaipur x 2: she likes the set collection and the trading. Hasn’t figured out relative values yet.

Cosmic Encounter x 2: played with a dummy 3rd player. Highlight was when she turned to me and first confirms that it’s OK to say you are going to negotiate when you are not really, and I explained that yes, in a game like this it’s OK to lie. It’s not OK to lie about brushing your teeth or washing your hands, but specifically in this game, yes, it’s OK. She grins, her eyes light up, and she whispers ā€œI’m going to trick yellow, I’m going to tell yellow I’m going to negotiate, but it’s a lie, shhh, it’s a secretā€ then turns to the empty chair and says to the dummy player who always plays a random card ā€œI’m going to negotiate, OK? Let’s negotiateā€, then she crowed loudly when we flipped the dummy card to reveal a negotiate, then she proceeded to get very worried by the tokens amassed by Fury for the ā€œpower of vengeanceā€ and the dummy player getting angry.

Pandemic lite: simplified rules (no events, hand limit, or fast travel), 4 epidemics, unsurprisingly we saved the world.

My husband’s middle niece (a very smart 11 year old) and his parents came over for pizza and s’mores this evening. The niece and I also played games with whatever other adults we could rope in at any given moment. First it was my husband pulled in for Villainous. Her Evil Queen beat my Mother Gothel and his Ratigan. Then we added my mother-in-law for Azul. The niece and I tied at 76 with the mother-in-law not far behind at 74. After s’mores, we came back for Mysterium with my husband and I as psychics and the niece as our ghost. We breezed through the early part, only getting stuck once for me and twice for him but we failed on the final dream. Drats.

Fun afternoon/ evening with far more in person gaming than I’ve had in a long time. It was the end of her week at the grandparents. Her two sisters will each get their own week. Perhaps a gaming evening will be arranged with them, too.

That looks beautiful! I love Rosenberg’s 2 players. I’m giving this one a shot.

Man. The Estates is one of my fave games. Yes. I believe experience will make the game less fragile. Newbies have a strong urge to sabotage someone badly, but the victim will become vindictive to crash the entire game and send everyone to minus points. Which is interesting. The game is hands-off where it doesn’t stop you or punish you from screwing someone badly, but you don’t want to, because the game will allow others to do the same to you

First of all, after so many defeats, I have won against mighty @benkyo as the Soviets with nail-biting 2 pts!

Badly lost 2 games of Battle Line. Still my fave 2 player small box.

War of the Ring 2 as Sauron. I manage to build up quickly and blitz through Rohan. The Free Peoples retaliated with Gandalf killing Saruman

It’s interesting to see the game as the Shadow player, as I mostly end up with the Free Peoples. Shadow players get to dictate both the pace of the game and also the focus. As the Shadow player in this game, most of the fighting is in the north, against the Elves and the Northmen. My Witch King is in Angmar way up north.

Gondor was left untouched until late game.

I was defeated as I didnt muster enough troops up north, and suffered heavy losses. Moria and Dol Guldur were captured by the Elven forces.

Rohan overrun after a few rounds

You beat Benkyo? I’m starting to question my decision to start a new game versus you!

I just checked, and in the 4 years since the app was published, I have lost 6 games on it (well, 5, as I don’t count the draw as a loss).

LaLunaVerde, thanks for adding one to the tally!

Had a games day with the family yesterday. Got to show them Star Wars: Imperial Assault which they picked up quickly and had fun with, so I planted the seed of starting a campaign sometime. emperor cackle
Then a game of Unmatched that we played four player. Honestly I think four player is the superior version of the game it was such a tense and fun fight with Bruce Lee and Medusa vs Sinbad and King Arthur. I (Bruce Lee) died first after taking out Merlin but Sinbad had become a monster so he ended me quick. King Arthur was a victim of Medusa’s stone gaze and was out, then Medusa proceeded to outlast Sinbad by putting up Harpy barriers and smartly maneuvering. It was a blast and my heart was racing the whole time.
And finally we got in a game of Quacks of Quedlinburg to cap off the night. I exploded four out of the nine rounds. Honestly Quacks is one of my favourite games now.

Played my first game of Century: Spice Road with my partner and her grandmother yesterday. This game is a blast! It’s definitely a dry game, but I love the feeling of building and tweaking this simple card engine that ramps up exponentially over the course of the game; it’s simple but flexible, which I always enjoy. Strangely enough, it reminds me a lot of Istanbul, in that it’s a cross between a race game, a Euro game, and a sandbox. There are so many paths you can take, and all of them lead to points, but you need to be able to scope out which paths get you there faster. I’m also just a sucker for a good card game, and Spice Road is almost entirely just playing cards and picking up cards. I’ll probably come up with some kind of solo variant for this, because it’s strangely captivating to me and I want to play it a lot more.

As well as a first game of Nemo’s War (which is absolutely brilliant), this past weekend I went to see family for a barbecue in the garden. I taught and played several games of Mancala, which is a perfect garden game while people drink. Then we played some Just One and a few games of Codenames. I ended the weekend with a learning solo play of Paladins of the West Kingdom.

A really nice weekend of a heavy sandwich with light filling, it was really enjoyable.

Nemo’s War is so good!

I got my physical copy of A Quiet Year to the table (well, floor) with my two oldest (9 and 6) and it was a blast. We played on a 36*40 inch Chessex grid, and had an abundance of birds. They discovered a ā€˜chicken cooker’ in the early spring and solved the food scarcity. It was fantastic.
