I always cite that one of our most expensive science machines has code that runs on a 3.5” disc.
It was fun trying to update the software on arrival.

About 10 years ago, in another job, I was let in to see Scotland’s system that held NHS numbers for all individuals in Scotland (and many dead people). At the heart of the Frankenstein’s monster of machines was a green screen terminal from the 70s which nobody wanted to shut off.
I understand it has been fixed now …
Until about 2005 or 8, my dad had a n instrument that was driven by an IBM PC. Like, the original one. It had an expansion chassis with a bunch of custom isa cards that did the real work, so no way to upgrade it. I had to find an original floppy drive for it towards the end of the time he used it. There was some timing problem that kept anything but the full height drive from working. I bought a couple on eBay and had to fix them to get a working one.
We’ve just had to try and download some photos (our Wedding Photos from 2012) from a CD. Not a single computer in the house (and we have some reasonably old laptops) had a CD drive. Just had to borrow one off my inlaws - it was so old, if you asked it to move more than 10 photos at a time (into my wife’s google drive) it panicked and crashed. There were 880 photos…
Next time, I’ll buy an external drive…
I keep a couple, but mostly for ripping the occasional CD (or, as I like to think of them, “proof of ownership”).
Maybe Heinz know something I don’t, but I’m pretty sure sugar comes from plants. (It’s sweetened with stevia.).
Oh weird… I’d seen an ad for this and assumed that it was just a less sweet version of their regular ketchup that was a bit more “adult”, rather than a less-sugar-but-still-sweet-with-a-substitute situation.
It is noticeably less sweet than their standard ketchup. My wife, who is diabetic and has cut back on so many carbs in her diet that many things now taste “too sweet” uses “no sugar added” everything and specifically Heinz ketchup (we both dislike other brands).
No Sugar Added:
Standard:
2g ketchup is still delicious and I don’t know why we need 4g ketchup.
Faster downloads?
It’s been raining here lately. I guess the previous Bank Holiday Monday was the last day of Summer.
I’m still gonna wear shorts. It’s not that cold. I think I switch to wearing trousers when it’s around 5 degrees by late Autumn (41 degrees for US)
I didn’t stop wearing shorts all last winter! Yes I am one of those people
A postman?
Do you know what - if it paid better, I think I’d be quite happy being one!
What’s the flip flop forecast for the UK?
