A fine looking slab of hog, there.
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII’m outta here! Two weeks holiday! Yay!
Me too! But 1.5 weeks.
In reality, they scream.
It’s “Grunz grunz” in German and “Knor knor” in Dutch, and I like how ALL OF THESE are correct
It tends to be described as a portrayal of a sleeping woman. She’s not asleep: look at the foot.
I don’t live that close to Luton (and the Radio 1 Big Weekend) but I can pretty clearly hear Coldplay this evening.
Would be nice if I liked Coldplay.
Forgot to add this to my two vacation reports. So here are the games we took on vacation.
Should be easy to spot which stack is mine.
My eldest has extended his stay in West Wales to go camping with some friends. We forgot (among many things) a lamp so we bought a new one
Its great, however the bottom unscrews to “hold the included USB cable”. I think this is clearly designed to smuggle drugs into festivals.
At least we’ll be able to resell it when he gets home!
Trick question! Both stacks are yours! Otherwise you aren’t doing it properly.
Was in town, had to visit FLGS. Talked to one of the sales guys who came up to me saying “I can try to help but I guess I won’t be able to”. (The other one still tries and sometimes succeeds–that one plays more newer games but he wasn’t there today). I didn’t buy anything–looks like the Sommerloch is already upon us or maybe die Vor-SPIEL-Flaute. I was wondering where the nominations for SdJ were… apparently they are pushed back so they aren’t “over-shadowed” by the soccer stuff. Then he asked what I thought was going to be nominated. And I went “Oops… no idea?”
I struggled a bit to come up with candidates–not every year has a Cascadia or Die Crew. So after some more deliberation here are a few guesses what might make the nomination lists (I may be wrong with the cutoff for which year a game can be nominated). Mostly I have ideas for Kennerspiel:
- Mischwald
- Skyteam
- Daybreak (probably not because it has to be widly available and it is absolutely not)
- Other choices might be Darwin’s Journey, World Wonders, Nucleum, Knarr or Vale of Eternity which have all been published in German and are available. I probably shouldn’t check FLGS but the bookstores to see what they have.
- Not nominated b/c no German Edition: Fit to Print, Sunrise Lane, Hegemony, Dune Imperium: Uprising
- Not sure if it should have been on last year’s list and got snubbed: Earth
I am coming up short for actual SdJ weight games:
- Oops these were on last year’s list: That’s not A Hat, Hitster
- No buzz (this has rarely kept games from being nominated but still): Mycelia, Nunatak, MLEM
- No German edition: Harmonies (edit: apparently there is a German edition but “widely available” is not what this is but that might be because of the buzz/hotness? As much as I enjoy it–I just played 2 solos–I am not sure it has the staying power for SdJ), Nekojima (Huch! bungled that one)
Just some musings because I can.
Okay so the nominees are there. Let’s see:
Kennerspiel
- Daybreak – obvious to me
- Ticket 2 Ride Legacy – really? A game that expensive? I guess Ticket 2 Ride never got SdJ and so they felt the need or is it that bad of a year?
- Guild of Merchant Explorers – another one that was late to the German market and I had totally lost track of when it got here because I got the English edition 2 years ago? It’s fine. But I never guessed this would make the list.
Mischwald only made the Shortlist. Oh well. I don’t get that over at least 2 of the actual nominees. Maybe I should play the ones I haven’t played as much as Daybreak (up to 66 plays solo + 2 player mostly) to see how they are “better” than Mischwald or at least better suited for Kennerspiel.
Spiel des Jahres
- Sky Team – not having played this one I thought it would be Kennerspiel. Too bad it is 2 player exactly. I doubt this would be worth getting for me. And it doesn’t sound like the kind of game I have to own. I’d rather try it on someone elses table. Or at SPIEL but last year all the tables were swamped all the time…
- Captain Flip – this one I never heard of before, never seen it at a shop.
- In the Footsteps fo Darwin – I only know about this because I was watching The Dice Tower a year (or 2?) ago. Tom Vasel really enjoyed this. It sounded too simple for me and I already had one Darwin themed game (Journey) I didn’t enjoy. But it sounded interesting at least. I think I’ve seen copies at the various shops I frequent. I hope this wins so our friends buy it and I can try it
Harmonies made the shortlist. I kind of expected that. It is a good game but something feels like it is not sufficient for SdJ however much I personally like it. The only other one I heard about from the shortlist is Trekking through Time and that one I only know about because it was also recced by the Dice Tower crew about a year or two back. But it was mostly unavailable and my other buddy analysis pals on BGG thought it was too simple. Which makes it good SdJ material I guess. Maybe I need to play that one, too
It’s nice to have some inspiration for games to check out at SPIEL that aren’t exactly super new. Also I was thinking of getting Guild of Merchant Explorers onto the sell pile, I think I need to revisit that one to understand how it comes to be nominated .
Its a fun little filler. Not masses of decisions but its goes quick and does have a little bit to it.
I’m at a cheap hotel tonight as I’m at awards do.
The WiFi Password is the default router one. I won’t be connecting to that…
Eh, you’re encrypting everything anyway, right? I mean, it could be the best wifi security in the world, or even a good old-fashioned ethernet socket, but it still has to go through the hotel’s infrastructure, and whatever lowest-bidder company they outsourced the access to, before it even hits the Internet…
The German military would.
