This morning when I got in from the beach I stopped in at a convenience store in a 150-year-old weatherboard building, to buy a kilo of coffee beans. They have an espresso machine and two baristas. On the verandah at the front an old man in his seventies and a young man in his mid-thirties were sipping engineered coffees and discussing in loud tones which of their cows were bulling.
You don’t get that sort of thing in the Big Smoke.
