Last game you bought?

Bought Kaivai which is well regarded by some Geekbuddies (yes. I’m gonna do the Geekbuddy post thingy) and The Golden Ages, because it’s by Quined Games so I’m gonna try it.

As my wishlist for games dwindles, it becomes increasingly easier to focus on and track down those hard-to-find titles that I can’t just put on an Amazon wishlist and my friends/family will buy it for me. So I’ve taken to stalking certain games on BGG with subscriptions for both GeekList listings (to be notified of auctions) as well as BGG Marketplace listings. Surprisingly, I saw a copy of Iwari: Deluxe Edition pop up for a very reasonable price, cheaper than what the Kickstarter pledge would be if you did the EUR-USD conversion today. When it arrived, I discovered the person had also paid for the gameplay-content addons.

And, over the weekend, I had a peculiar thing arrive: Ratcatcher: The Solo Adventure Game. I sure was excited about this back in 2020 when I pledge for it. And perhaps that’s all I’ll say for now. I really don’t care for the art style, but that should be easily overlooked because it’s quite busy and it will just blur into the background if the game is any good (which according to 1PG on BGG, it’s not really).

So I bought a couple of boardgames recently, breaking my self-enforced ban on buying games while we’re stuck in lockdown (it had to give at some point!):

Everdell, I’d heard about this one, but never got a chance to play before. I think I was finally swayed after seeing some similarities to IS:Empires of the North, which I rather enjoy. It was also on a fairly steep sale, which helped swing things in favor of me giving it a whirl! Though it’ll be solo only for the moment I suspect (a few too many rules for my wife’s taste).

Ohanami, I’d been thinking of picking this one up for awhile, so it made sense to add on to my other buys. I’m a sucker for simple but thoughtful card games and this seems to fit the bill. No solo game here but I think I can probably persuade my wife to give it a whirl.

Tuscany:Essential Edition, this has been on my “maybe” list for awhile, but finally swayed by playing some more Viticulture on BGA (I very nearly won one of the games without producing any wine at all, which felt like an acheivement). I’ve always ‘liked’ Viticulture, but not loved it. My recent plays have reminded me that I do really like it, and the additions in Tuscany seem cool (I particularly fancy the new structures and expanded board). Also good price - hard to beat. It’ll also get some solo plays I suspect.

The Crew:Mission Deep Sea. The previous Crew has been a big hit with my group, so this was a no brainer.

Everytime I hear about this game, it reminds me that I havent played it for ages, and that I should do something about that

Not much caving needed on my part but as I browsed ebay Kleinanzeigen yesterday I saw a “punched but unplayed” copy of “Wir sind das Volk” which despite not being a game for me really–as @Benkyo would probably agree after my stellar losses–is so much a theme for me that I couldn’t say no to it at that price.

Purple metallic cards, I hope it’s fun.

Now that I’m seeing that picture closer up… Isn’t that Max Gland? With a spider? He’s dyed his beard, but he can’t fool me!

Another round of “it wasn’t me guv!” My husband tells me that he’s ordered Mariposas and Viticulture. He also ordered an insert for Viticulture because “I know you like building them” (and they say romance is dead  )

More outbound means more inbound! I picked up Stargrave this afternoon, and took Warp’s Edge along with it. I’m hoping the latter fulfills in a way that Under Falling Skies disappointed (not enough pew-pew!), but we’ll see.

Stargrave is my attempt at fulfilling my wont for a miniatures experience which is wholly detached from any kind of competitive scene. We’ll see if it ever gets played.

In my opinion, Warp’s Edge is way more Pew-Pew at the expense of campaign/plot, but definitely an interesting puzzle! And not nearly as random as Under Falling Skies can feel.

I enjoyed the mechanics, for sure. I’m curious to hear how you feel about it in comparison!

I’ll be interested in how I end up feeling about it too! I certainly can’t complain about the quality of UFS at all, just that I didn’t get what I wanted from it—I was punished too hard for being a hotshot.

I’ve mentioned it before, but my namesake speaks to my trigger finger (hey, I’m RYAN by the way :kissing_heart:), and getting slapped for spending (definitely) too much time taking out the SPACE INVADERS rubbed me the wrong way. I swear to god any other theme wouldn’t have this obsessive effect.

Anyway, I’m going into this one pretty well aware that the campaign is largely tacked on, but I’m also very hopeful that there’s a challenge and high score element here that pushes my buttons. I’m ok with just setting up a given ship and boss combination and seeing how it all plays out (pretty common for the genre it’s mimicking) and if it hits I’ll be seeking out the expansion right away. More options!!

[EDIT] OMFG I’m just realizing they’ve distilled bullet grazing into a deck thinning mechanism.

Have you come across Five Parsecs From Home at all?

Very narrative driven solo/co-op miniature agnostic table top game, might be worth checking out if Stargrave doesn’t hit the mark.

Surprisingly I hadn’t heard even a whisper of that one. Modiphius usually does/publishes very good work so I’ll definitely keep this one on my radar, thank you!

Nordic Weasel Games have a few different versions of the base rules for different settings. The fantasy version (Five Leagues from the Borderlands) is due to get a print publication by Modiphius as well, but is currently available digitally.

I ordered that one at work! I’m excited to give it a try!

Stack of recent arrivals… over the week 2 Kickstarters delivered:

  • Mouse Cheese Cat Cucumber
  • Paladins City of Crowns and Big Box (I like the smaller boxes, but felt compelled to get this as a collector’s item kind of because I really like the series and …)

Bought used on ebay Kleinanzeigen

  • Wir sind das Volk
  • Not yet arrived: Stephensons Rocket & Intrige (cheap enough that when she offered to pay some of the postage I declined and paid in full)

From my FLGS visit:

  • Under Falling Skies: played last night and it seems I have reached the end of my ability to play by handwavium, this game made me get AP and I don’t get AP often. Will play again, first game and all that… and because it is FLGS of course I overpayed even after I factor in the 10% discount.

From my list of white whale games:

  • Five Tribes. Cathala is one of my favorite designers and this is one of the last great games Days of Wonder made before “losing their touch” and I didn’t buy it back when I first played because my AP prone partner couldn’t play it. Still won’t play it I am sure. But I am at a point where I just had to have it despite that
  • (Cyber station was on a list of preorders that they just packed into the package they were sending me anyway so that’s nice)

In keeping with my trend to not buy anymore new games (ANGOLA! was an outlier, I promise!) I’ve bought some more upgrades to a game I already own. In this case, Gale Force 9’s version of DUNE. I bought the official play mat, and plastic tokens to upgrade the cardboard pieces.

Bought The Estates back into the fold. It’s not a game for everyone (what game is?) but with teh right group, it’s excellent

I really like The Estates. It’s a game that’s played above the table, rather than on it – a type of game that my primary gaming opponent doesn’t care for. So it’s been hard for me to get it to the (and above the?) table since I played it the first few times.
