No designer or publisher names on the box. And print quality is pretty poor on box and contents.

I don’t understand where the money is in hookie boardgames. The cost of production is relatively high, the profit margin is still relatively low and the market is small. There must be easier ways to make money illegally

The impression I get is that most of them go to markets like India where they want boardgames but mostly don’t have the money for a full-fat Euro-American production.

Card games are very cheap to produce, from my understanding, so those tend to get counterfeited more often.

My partner Emily made a tarot deck out of transparent plastic where you overlay one card on another.

The fake Chinese version is tiny and has no book, low quality art and sticky plastic. Emily gets daily emails from people asking where to buy the book (you can’t, it only comes with the real deck) and FB won’t take the fake adverts down. The fake deck has her name on it and everything.

Card is one thing, but I don’t get why scammers would make an entire deck out of vinyl or whatever the plastic is?

My understanding is that the cost of producing each board game isn’t that high - it’s everything else that’s expensive. There’s fixed overheads in the pre-production stages (design/art), then there’s cost of shipping, storage, marketing, premises, utilities, etc.

Most counterfeits are produced locally to the markets they’re intended for (e.g. China in the Agent Avenue example), so shipping/storage costs are less. These markets usually have cheaper storage/labour/premises/utilities, but are often even cheaper because of the involvement of organsied crime and the exploitation of vulnerable people. They don’t have to pay for design, art or marketing so fewer fixed overheads. They will also cut corners on production quality as well.

The counterfeits that are made for the international market tend to be sold for a lot more than what they would if sold locally, which tells you how much shipping plays into the cost of our boardgames. Those thin margins probably represent a decent gain to an unscrupulous producer in China or India.

I’ve also heard that they’ll use the same dies and a second/third shift to produce them. So you produce the actual copies and just swap materials o produce the counterfeits as the factory line is set up to run off the product.

The Daily Weather looked neat. Let us know what you think of it? (It was on my list for “at some point”, but Button Shy shipping is currently too expensive for me to justify any small-batch purchases.)
