That’s 13 words. Five more to go!

I have written a mini rulebook: https://tekeli.li/pocketmod/gibberers.pdf .

Huk - good

Dran - alive

Lort - end

Aven - want

Nikka - thing ?

And we’re good to go!

Lordof1 is the first Mentor. I will send him a random level 1 card, without looking at it myself.

New Mentor Guide:

  • pick a line off the card.
  • the tokens shown on the left side are what the players gain if we make a correct communication. For this Basic game, we want pairs of anything, or single purples (one purple = a pair of anything else, but the words are harder).
  • if there are multiple words on the line, the bit you communicate is the noun, but the rest can go in the dictionary later.
  • create a New Language word for the new idea, and try to explain it in New Language. You may also create a support word; we don’t get rewarded for guessing it, but it may help explain things, and one of the help tokens translates it and adds it to the dictionary.

Okay. The new word to enter our language is Hurrk.

I think it’s worth pointing out that we are in the ‘prehistoric’ era, so the words in this era will be basic concepts that would be reasonable for a prehistoric human to know and understand.

To define hurrk, I am going to define a support word, which I’ll call ‘pling’. From now on I’ll only use our language, and will do so until someone guesses the main word correctly, but I will indicate which word I’m trying to describe (at the table I would point at the word). So basically I think you’re allowed to discuss among yourselves in English, but I can only respond to queries in our language.

We have 5 (I think?) tokens, each of which can be used for an official ‘guess’ (I won’t respond to guesses which aren’t official, and I’ll assume you’re talking among yourselves). The other use for tokens is for a clue, of which there are 4 types, each of which we can use once (all in the rules). Having played the game in person, I think I decided that it’s generally worth taking advantage of the free support word, because if you manage to guess it, it expands our vocabulary for later rounds.

If that all makes sense to everyone, let me know, and if it does I’ll start trying to define the words and won’t respond in here with anything except our new language until this nightmare is over and you have guessed the word(s) or we have all been eaten by wolves.

Main word: Hurrk

Support word: Pling

Oh, also, do we have a name for our culture/civilisation? I think we’re allowed that too.

In basic mode there are three sorts of clue, each of which costs one of our five tokens and each of which we can use only once per round.

  • Finger: mentor looks at the large “cave painting” cards and points one image out. (I’ll scan them in if needed; there’s a rough idea middle left here https://boardgamegeek.com/image/8333683/ )
  • Pen: mentor writes support word meaning in Old Language (we add it to the dictionary)
  • Alphabet: mentor looks at the vocabulary slips and indicates one letter. (I suspect this works better with Japanese characters!)

I suggest we make official guesses and clue requests in bold.

Tekeli, surely

points at pling

tot brank pling

pling gand

pling ti mun

pling dran

pling ti err

P.s. any suggestions of how to do gestures? I’m worried that using words will make it much easier than you guessing what I’m gesturing; all I can think of is uploading a photo of me gesturing?

Hmm. A tree, a jungle?

pling niffle nikka?
pling vebrank gand nikka?

gum pling niffle naka

pling ti vebrank gand nikka

pling gand nikka

To players

OK, I’m looking at forest or jungle, but someone else have a go

I think everyone can only speak New Language during this part (at least that’s what it says in the expert rules, not sure if it’s different for basic)

heem yap pling: niffle gand dran nikka, tot brank pling huk

aven yap hurrk

(Does not seem to be anything in the rules about ever revealing the meaning of the support word except when using a hint, even once the round is over)

That isn’t how we played in real life, but I’m happy to play as written!
