> The King’s Dilemma

Huh, we managed to play Chapter 10 in **Oathsworn**. I am still firmly on the fence with it… on the one hand, it’s certainly not _bad_. By Kickstarter standards I would say it’s spectacular. But that’s a low bar.
The story is done relatively well, although this chapter focused on a species of which we have a member in our group, and it had almost no impact (the A’Dendri, treant-people, apparently have no verbal language due to a lack of mouths. And lungs. Why did we just find that out now? And why did the fact we had an A’Dendri with us have no impact on the story at any point?). The combat is getting a little easier now that we have better gear and skills and know what we’re doing.

Ah well. On the 9th we crack open my new copy of **The King’s Dilemma** , and I’m legit excited about that one. Different group, but I’m curious to see how the lite-RPG-esque elements of the game will work out, and if Andy (my partner) decides that she’s interested in it or not. We shall see!

Other than that, I got **Feast for Odin** on the table for the first time in… ye gods, years at least. Possibly 5 years? It’s been a long time. What a lovely little game. I lost by a mile (75 to 14), but I had a great time doing it, and I can’t wait to try it again! Also played a quick game of **King of Tokyo** and another of **Cockroach Poker** , and Story 3 in our **Stuffed Fables** campaign. No other games from the list, but that’s okay!

> Vindication, Eclipse 2nd Dawn for the Galaxy, Furnace, Renature, Newspeak, Stick 'Em, String Railways, Sidereal Confluence (plus expansion), The Undercity, Tyrants of the Underdark, New Salem, Dune Conquest, Rallyman GT, Starforged, Frosthaven, Star Wars Shatterpoint, King’s Dilemma, My Island

A good month for first plays! Two new games on the list, one of which we played our first game of already (today, technically, but I won’t remember that in a month!).

**Rallyman GT** was… weird. Not “bad,” but I felt like I was missing something. Actually, I’m pretty sure I was missing several somethings… I’ll have to re-read the rules, because it seemed almost impossible with the track we had to pass your opponent. Although that may have been a 2-player issue more than anything? Not giving up on it yet.

**Stick 'Em** was a particularly mean trick taker that I very much enjoyed, and **Eclipse 2nd Dawn** I actually played twice since the first time was such a hit early in the month. I’m… okay with it. I enjoy it, but I still like TI:4 better? And the fact that missiles are still broken AF was disheartening (our second game I had starbases equipped with Plasma Missiles and was functionally unassailable). Still, the game is fast and elegant, and I like _most_ of it.

**My Island** is interesting. Not as pretty or as elegant as the original, and that’s unfortunate, but I’m willing to give it more than a single play. I’m curious if it will have the same problem as **My City** (the last chapter of My City I was functionally unstoppable… so much so that I had to start miscounting my score and making intentional poor plays so that Andy had any chance whatsoever… the early rewards for losing were enough to keep the game balanced, but around Chapter 7 the rewards for winning were too good, too quickly).

I did manage to get my **Shatterpoint** models completely painted, and I’m almost done with the last of my Rebels for **SW Legion**. About 30 to go… 8 Ewoks, 8 Mandalorians, 12 Commandos, Lando, and two different Boba Fett sculpts (“Classic” and “Dad-bod”). And then that’s it. I can’t afford more models until 2024. I’m going to try very, very hard to be responsible… Andy is starting to get really worried about money (which is kinda adorable… I’ve been worried about money for _decades_, but she’s not used to it, and I don’t want to make her life more difficult than it needs to be… plus, I’m already depressed, no need to drag her into the muck if being more conscious of my spending makes things better)

[dons Rallyman GT rabid fan hat]
[seriously, I love this game but if you end up not loving it that’s Just Fine]

If someone gets way ahead it is indeed hard to overtake them, though to _stay_ ahead they’ll generally need to burn through focus to avoid LoC. If you’re behind, take more chances. Play a long enough game that this focus ebb and flow matters; I really prefer two laps minimum. Blocking is a big part of the game, though.

I think part of the problem was me fumbling my way through the rules for the first time, trying to learn and teach simultaneously based off an explanation you made a while back.

So, for the first few rolls I didn’t realize spending Focus was non-linear.
For the next few rolls after that, I didn’t realize that you gained focus whether you made the roll or not.

I also think we picked the wrong “starter” cars because wow is the iconography on the cars bad… well, not “bad” so much as painfully unclear? Like, I have a dozen cards that all say “GT6”, but nothing that has a clear indication of which I should be using in which circumstance? We ended up with 2 Cruise dice (I think it’s supposed to be 3?) and 2 Breaking dice?

I don’t blame any of this on the game (well, aside from the lack of clear identification markers on the different cars aside from _tiny_ little letters).

</div>

I wrote “4”, “5” and “6” on the undersides of my car models with a wear-resistant pen when I was unpacking the game.

A single card defines both car class (GT4, GT5, GT6) and tyre type (this is _only_ shown in the icon of the tyre at top left, with deep grooves, shallow grooves, or no grooves at all for the KS extra / Adrenaline Pack “soft” tyres - I think this was to keep the card language-independent). One side of the card is for a dry track (sun icon), the other for a wet one (rain icon).

So you should have two or three cards available when playing: all GT6, all your colour, but different sorts of tyre. When the weather changes between dry and wet, everyone flips their cards. When you stop and change tyres, you change to a different card and pick the correct side for the current weather.

Standard GT6 asphalt tyres in the dry gives you gears 1-6, two coast dice, and three brake dice.

Tomorrow will be 2 years of playing at least one game every day!
Considering stopping now, as the original 30 day plan has got completely out of hand. It’s good, and has taught me to make time to do things that aren’t just netflix or scroll, but it does disincentivse activities that can’t be logged on bgg, like mini painting and solo RPGs.

Not sure!

Pleased to have made it to a pass mark here.

- A Game of Thrones Catan: Brotherhood of the Watch is more interesting than Catan, but still takes a bit too long for my liking
- La Crypte de Sedlec is good fun, although I got thrashed in all three games so far 😝
- Au Griffon fonffon gives the brain a good workout, particularly as some of the vocab pushes the limits of my French

Have an Olympian October of gaming everyone!

Wow, **King’s Dilemma** is… fascinating. Not really as a “game,” but as an event, as a storytelling exercise… wow. Really digging it.

And losing _massively_. Like, not even close. But I don’t think the game works nearly as well with 4 as it does with 5… and my partner was willing to play the first two sessions with us, but then decided that was enough. The noble House Kikiriki decided to bow out, leaving House Ericius, House Quagimus, House Cardoso, and House Necrogartner to spoiler some spoilers, while also spoilering so many poor.

Also got in two teaching games of Battletech with 4 new players. Man, I love that stupid game. I still can’t call it good. But I enjoy it. I’m really looking forward to tackling a campaign (since my homebrew one didn’t get very far… but the guy I was playing with still wants to, but has been ill for the last couple weeks).

Other than that, we played another 2 chapters of **Oathsworn** (it continues to be good, not great), oh, and Andy and I continue to dig away at **My Island** , and I continue to feel that **My City** is better, but this one is pretty good too. Not _as_ good, but still fun. We’re on Chapter 5 now, so 12 playthroughs so far. Hopefully we can finish this month!

Picked up **Spots** because it’s adorable. The game itself is fine… it’s a sort of push-your-luck style game with more style than substance, but so is **Can’t Stop** and that’s been a longtime favourite in our house. A little expensive for what it offers (I got mine for $30, and I think if it had been $20-22-ish, I would be very content with the purchase).

Oh, I didn’t quite get all my Rebels painted for **SW Legion** … I finished the Ewoks, but still have the Mandas, Commandos, Lando, and two Fetts to do, but I was hired for a commission (the entire Clone Wars Core box plus a few extra models), and I have 99% finished that in 2 weeks, which I am very proud of. Going to put the finishing touches on the models today, notify the client that he can pay and pick up tomorrow, and then maybe get started on my second commission… 32 **Car War** models. That… will be an interesting challenge. I’m not crazy about painting for money instead of being able to finish my own stuff, but the attentive among you will remember that Andy was getting super stressed about money, and this helps. I’m making approximately an extra $200/week, which isn’t nothing. So.

The „easy“ 10x10 solo challenge has changed yet again…

- Cascadia 10+/10
- Grove 10/10 (new entry due to vacation, very fun)
- Naturopolis 10+/10 (this year‘s top \*polis game)
- Trailblazers 10+/10 (maybe not my GotY but in the Top 5 so far)
- It‘s a Wonderful World 8/10
- Sagani 7/10
- 51st State 6/10
- Ark Nova 5/10
- Evergreen 5/10
- Food Chain Island 4/10

(took the other \*polis games out of the running or my list would be filled with them. I also took Turing Machine out of there, despite finishing the 10 games, I just don‘t like it in there)

Last night I played my first game of Cascadia with the expansion. Very nice.

Huh, a surprisingly good month for completing games (although I technically finished my D&D run in September, and just didn’t notice!).

The final game of **Battletech** was actually one of the new solo/Co-op scenarios, and honestly a surprising amount of fun. It was the first time I’d ever played with technology from after 3025 (pre-Clan): it’s basically two Clan lights (piloted by elite 3-2 mechwarriors) against four Inner Sphere mechs (two lights, two mediums) piloted by rookies (5-4). The rules are designed for Alpha Strike, but the only real issue is Heat… everything else works pretty well, but the Puma, even with 22 Heat Sinks, generates 30 to 34 heat a turn… I just applied some common-ish sense, and it still worked pretty well. Next time I may try the 8-on-5 scenario, see how that goes… but that’s for much, much later.

We have now hit the halfway-ish point on **King’s Dilemma** (3 of the 6 stickers have been affixed), and I’m losing a bit of steam for it. Still neat, and the story is strong, but the game itself isn’t very game-y. Like, I am often voting for what I want to happen from a meta level (“I don’t want to sign any more negative stickers!”) rather than from a game-level. And that’s too bad. But we’ll still finish the campaign… we tend to get about 3-4 plays in a night, so maybe two more sessions? I’m thinking we’ll play a few games of **Dune** or **Rex** or something to cleanse our palate before moving on to another political-style game.

We didn’t manage to play any more games of **My Island** , hence why it’s going on the list. We still have 12 playthroughs to go, and I’m hoping Andy feels better enough that we can get back to playing (she’s had some slowly progressively worsening leg nerve pain, and is now finally back on the mend).

> Vindication, Eclipse 2nd Dawn for the Galaxy, Furnace, Renature, Newspeak, Stick 'Em, String Railways, Sidereal Confluence (plus expansion), The Undercity, Tyrants of the Underdark, New Salem, Dune Conquest, Rallyman GT, Starforged, Frosthaven, Star Wars Shatterpoint, King’s Dilemma, My Island, Spots

No new games acquired this month. With Andy out of work due to her injury I’ve had to be extra cautious with spending… and, honestly, nothing has thrown itself off the shelf at me at work, either. A few kinda neat looking games (I almost bought **Next Station Tokyo** because I love Tokyo), and one expansion for **Star Wars Armada** that I definitely don’t need (a Victory-Class Star Destroyer, because it turns out the Republic Fleet is allowed to fly them… I think I may need to get a Separatist ship for my Rebel fleet too, although I forget which… neat idea by AMG to allow a very few cross-faction ships like that!). Oh, and some pre-painted terrain for Battletech that is very pretty.

This month I think I’m getting three boxes of Battletech (Hansen’s Roughriders, Eridani Light Horse, and the Northwind Highlanders), but that’s it. My current commission work is finishing 60 more **SW Legion** models on Umbara bases. I’m legit more concerned about the basing than the models themselves… I’ve gotten pretty good at painting Clones and most of the Droids aren’t too bad. Kraken is going to be a fair bit of freehand, but I think I can probably manage that. After this commission, the second customer I had wants me to paint 4 giants from Age of Sigmar, and I’ll have to think about that. I’m not great with fleshtones, and the giants are a _lot_ of fleshtone, but we’ll see. If there’s a good tutorial I can follow, I may yet.

Some treasures played from the Shelf of Opportunity. Love! Avenue, always both frustrating and fun to connect those grapes. Bohnanza was also a big hit, as was Lady Richmond with a different group.

I’m undecided about Crumbs! but perhaps there will be some refinements made to this playtest version as part of the Kickstarter.

Have a nourishing November of gaming everyone!

I didn’t fully declare but my aim was to get to no unplayed. I have only 18CZ to play to satisfy. I have an unpunched 1856 which I’ll keep unpunched in case it’s to go eventually and 1822mx which is on the sell pile. I also aim to help @lalunaverde so the hardship of 2 more games of Indonesia need to be ground through, which will be a slog playing a game in my top 3 twice more 🤬. I think regardless of whether I play 18CZ or not this will be a successful year if it’s one unplayed and only 2 bought all year. If it hadn’t been for Mr Verde selling something I’ve been aware of being good for ages for very cheap it’d only have been one purchase, generous friends 😪

Well, the holidays have officially started, and therefore my time has officially vapourized. I had two commissions to finish in November (the 32 cars from a complete set of Car Wars, and 60 Star Wars Legion minis), and I finished the first draft of my eighth novel, but that was it. Barely any time for that, much alone anything else.

Did manage to weasel in a trip to London to see a buddy, where we played a game of Battletech using Clantech for the first time (really neat!), and then played his first game of Armada very, very loosely (too many ships, not enough upgrades or anything like that), but I think he got an idea for the system at least.

Gosh I love Armada. I really hope I get to play it more someday.

My partner is still injured (a nerve pinched between the L4 and L5, according to the MRI), so no sitting and playing games with her, but she seems to be on the mend (she can at least walk a little and sit a little, whereas she was basically unable to stand for all of October). And because of the holiday hours at the game store, I had to put a hold on basically everything (my King’s Dilemma campaign and both RPGs I GM for). Ah well.

The nice thing about December, as hellish as it is for work (10-8 Mon through Fri, 10-6 on Sat, and 11-5 on Sun) is that after all that hustle I get a couple back-to-back days off, and I’m usually a vegetable for the evening of the 24th until the morning of the 27th, and sometimes we get some games in. This year is going to be worse up to that point because one of my colleagues (one of the useful ones, of which there are sadly few) is going to India for a wedding from the 9th until the 19th-or-so, so _that’s_ going to be an extra level of hell, but what can ya do?

No new games this month either. I did end up buying that Victory Class Star Destroyer for my Republic Fleet after playing with Nick because gosh what a great game, and I got the three boxes of Battletech (sitting downstairs waiting to be primed, which I may actually do today before work because the weather is shockingly mild). There were no good tutorials for Umbara basing, but I managed to fumble my way through making some okay looking basing (the client was happy, and that’s all that matters). Oh, and my other client (I only have two so far, and they take turns giving me stuff to paint) handed me 6 _giant_ Age of Sigmar models… Mega Gargants? They’re really big. Lots of fleshtones. I think I may need to break out the airbrush again…

Hire someone to go and seduce the fiance(e), ending the engagement. Thus no wedding and no need for your co-worker to leave.

Hey, you asked.

Very good effort for this year. The 10x5 is reasonable and it doesn’t feel like a chore to do. I still have some curating and purging to do, but I think I can try a 20x5 next time - an idea stolen from @Whistle_Pig

I stopped logging RFTG after 105-ish plays due to laziness

I still have time for **Through the Ages**
