18XX - where to start?

Yep. So AR shares were “freebies” when it came to the 14 cert limit. Everything else counted against.

I understood the ‘benefits’ of being in the yellow area fairly early on which is why I wasn’t that upset when AR’s share price got sunk. However its only with this round that I’ve understood what happens when you come out of that area. It’s probably in the rules somewhere but exactly where I have no idea.

In general, 1889’s rules weren’t written as rules but as discrepancies from 1830. The behavior of 1830’s market is identical to 1889’s and, as such, it’s likely not even mentioned in 1889’s rulebook.

18xx designers have a really bad habit of saying, “It’s 1830, except <these differences>”. And then the rules for the game become that plus the 1-off Q-and-A threads on BGG and/or 18xx mailing lists.

Fortunately, 1889, at least, is getting a new makeover/edition soon and the rulebook will be, likely, rewritten from scratch.

And we’re done!

I want to congratulate @mr.ister on his well earned victory and thank @RogerBW and @pillbox for a hard fought competition. I really did enjoy that!

Game over: mr.ister (¥8432), Name1ess (¥7781), RogerBW (¥5516), pillbox (¥3165)

Congratulations to mr.ister! Well played.

And well played to everyone else!

Let me know if you have any questions about the game.

Also, I’m up for another game whenever we get enough interested.

Given my usual performance at “dry” complicated games I’m quite surprised and happy with third place, if a fairly distant third.

Thanks to all. I don’t want to play again straight away, but I may well be up for another one in the future.

Thank you! Well played everybody, especially @Name1ess who came a lot closer than I imagined. That was a lot of fun.

Also again thanks to @pillbox for the fantastic 18XX guide you put up on here! I really think a wider audience might benefit from your work, maybe you should consider posting it on BGG or something like that.

I’d also be up for another game. If people would be interested, I’d also be willing to give Chesapeak a go.

I’ve had some time to think about the game we’ve just played and I can now see why 18xx has such a loyal but maybe limited following. The brutal cycles of stock and operating rounds set against the ticking clocks of rusting trains and slowly depleting tiles that may ruin everything deliver an experience that’s definitely not for everyone. This is not a Euro game! However there is a certain emergent beauty to be found in the mechanisms of this literal engine builder.

I also found the theme to come across surprising strongly with with the island’s geography and advancement of train technology really making an impact on play. I found myself thinking about how to reach towns, cities and ports and not the placement of hexagonal tiles.

Finally, I actually liked the slow pace at which we played because it gave me time to study the rules, figure out what was going on and come up with a plan. Even though I was still learning right to the very end - it was literally on the last operating round that I realised where the Bank’s money was shown! If we had been playing this in real time I would have been floundering pretty much the whole way through.

So I’m absolutely ready to go again either now or in a little while and with either 1889 or 18Chesapeake.

A 3-player game of 18Chesapeake may be the way to go.

But, a 4 or 5 player game would be fine to: so any of your lurking, feel free to chime in!

If we’re going in the 18Chesapeake direction then here are a couple of useful links:

The rules are downloadable from this Kickstarter update:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/all-aboardgames/18chesapeake/posts/2609211

Published in the last week, this is an online play hosted by Ambie from The Dice Tower using 18xx.games. It features Toby, the guy behind the site and Scott Petersen, the designer of 18Chesapeake.

Here is a question. The 18DO Kickstarter finishes in 10 hours

I’m sorely tempted to invest,as it seems to combine a 18XX with a more standard Euro which is appealing, but should I?

Two thoughts:

  1. If you don’t like it, there’s likely a pretty solid secondary market and you could very likely get your money back

  2. It’s “you’ve got euro in my 18xx” rather than “you’ve got 18xx in my euro”.

I’m backing it; assuming I’ll have a time machine and an alarming lack of concern over meddling with the past, watch this space for future-pillbox to let you know what future-me future-thinks:

THIS SPACE —>______________<— THIS SPACE

Future-pillbox not withstanding, I don’t think 18DO will likely ever be “the best 18xx” but it may be, in some circles, “the best 18xx-euro hybrid” (1822 is commonly mentioned in this space… But I really think 18DO stands to bring more “euro” to the fight and pull off the technical win.

I’m in for 18DO too. The fact that it has some different elements being the appeal here. I have a bunch of quite straight up 18xx games. Largely engineer styles so hoping that the heat, sweat and beer variant mixes things up a bit. Because it’s Fox in the Box involvement I reckon the quality of components will be good. Also having 3 variants might make it a goof candidate for being the only 18xx to own. Beginner game, Train Game and adding Euro bits game doesn’t seem a bad combination for a first/only game. Plus the designer has pedigree and an eye to a shorter play time than some so maybe that helps with your assessment of the risk.

Thank you both for your advice. I was still pondering whether to go for it or not right up to the last moment. I finally decided that I would, so I logged in and discovered that I’d got my time mixed up and had missed the deadline by an hour.

Oh well, I’ve justified my poor time keeping with the idea that if I’d have really wanted it I would have backed it already and not waited to the last moment.

If you don’t know, then you definitely know.

@mr.ister & @Name1ess

I’ve created a 3-player game of 18Chesapeake, game #2669
